    THOMAS RUSSELL WORLD TIME WATCH

    Hi all,

I'd be interested if anyone knows some information about this Thomas Russell world time watch.

It's big:49mm across without the crown and 57mm lug to lug.
Apart from all the cities it is marked THOS, RUSSELL, LIVERPOOL on the dial
    The bezel rotates.
The hands set from a push button
Nicely engraved on the movement plate " Makers to the Queen"
As you can see from the pictures the case is gunmetal

Looks like you've copy-pasted JavaScript instead of images.

I assume it is a pocket watch, so the best forum to post would be our Vintage and Pocket Watches Forum. Use a photohost to post pictures when re-posting.
    Kind regards

To me it seems to be a marriage or franken watch - a pocket watch movement in a wrist watch case. There have been no large wirst watches those times. Just saying.

Re: THOMAS RUSSELL WORLD TIME WATCH

According to information on the NAWCC site Thomas Russell was a prolific maker around the turn of the 19th century. It would appear that movement started out life in a pocket watch. The big GMT style watch with cities bezel became popular around the 1960's. To me the case looks newer. That watch is made to look like a GMT although there is no 24 hour hand. It is possible although unlikely imho that the 24 hour bezel is driven by the movement. Given the faded lume on the dial, new lume on the new hands and old pocket watch movement I think you have a mash-up of parts created not long ago.

    Is this the same watch?

Thank you John for your reply with detailed information.

Spot on - yes it is the actual watch, although I got it on eBay last year, only redeeming feature I paid a fraction of the WW1 Watch.com asking price. Perhaps the original buyer was hoping the make a profit from the original purchase.

Interesting watch and now I know more about it's history, it's slightly disappointing but certainly a talking point. I think I may sell it on with the true story behind it's history.

    Many thanks, Rob
