Thoughts on best watches under $500

So I'm kinda new to watches.
I recently found an old Omega and a old Caravelle diver for real cheap.
And this really sparked my interest in watches.
So.... Thoughts on some of the best watches under $500

So far i like this one the best around $450ish New

Hi and welcome to the hobby! :) That Bulova is a nice piece for sure, but perhaps you could be a little more clear on which properties you value in a watch? Do you prefer automatic or quartz? (Dumb question probably :P) What type of watch? Aviator, dresser, diver, vintage? Then; chronograph or non-chronograph? Swiss, Japanese, German, etc? Styling? Caseback? You can go on for ever! What do you prefer?

As an iteration for going on that Bulova, I'd suggest having a look at this beauty as well:

Welcome to the hobby! My suggestion as as someone who's purchased a dozen watches in the last year or so and sold most of them, start with something a little bit more restrained. Open hearts with several complications seem cool on the surface, especially when you're new to watches, but as you wear them for awhile you may find that you actually get tired of the "excess." I started with several chronographs, and ended up selling them all, because I really don't NEED a chronograph, and a three-hander has much better at a glance legibility.

Also, never pay full retail for a mall brand (Bulova, Citizen, etc). They hold their value horribly. If you went to sell that watch, you'd probably get maybe $100, if that.

I would probably suggest something like a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic, currently $465 at Jomashop. Very versatile watch that can be both dressed up and down, and enough water resistance for swimming and showering with no problem. More importantly, if you get tired of it and want to sell it later on down the line for something else, you'll be able to get most of that $465 back.

I agree. A bit too much going on on the Bulova.

And the abovementioned turtle would be the way I'd go. If you dig that amazing shape. Man now I want a turtle.

    Welcome aboard OP..
Don't be afraid to buy used. Most WIS take pretty good care of their watches, buy the seller(feedback)& use Paypal...watchrecon.com is a WW database of watches for sale on associated web sites....Oh & MOST all new Seiko's are WAYYY overpriced for the specs & they get flipped(sold)a LOT so buy used..They don't have sapphire crystals unless you spend big & the plastic applied markers look, well cheap & plastic...
Have a solid idea of what size watches fits you best, especially the total length(lug to lug)& watch height,an 18mm thick watch is a top heavy beast, especially if your small wristed...
Taste change as we grow, keep a diverse collection, even if it's a small one, so you won't be heavily invested in 1 style you might tire of...
Use the daily WAUW(What are you wearing)threads for reference of watches...There are a million choices & you will pretty much see every one of them in these threads...
Everyone's taste is different.Where 2 replies see too much going on with the Bulova the only problem I see is the hands don't have much contrast & are hard to pick up...
Don't be in too big a rush as it is a sure fire way to regret a purchase...Enjoy the chase & good luck...

Check out watchrecon.com. There are many pre-owned pieces on there under $500 that would be much more expensive if purchased new.
