    Tired of CGI Watches

Every year Basel rolls around and every year all the CGI watch images hit the internet. Deep down I know many times they produce these images because the watches aren't yet rolling off the factory line, but man I find it tiring.

Does anyone long (like I do) for actual watch photography rather than these fake looking, overly perfect cartoon watches.

It’s a two way street. When Oris launched the Depth Gauge they succeeded in making it look horrible and it was only when I saw it in the metal that I fell for it. As a result I reserve judgment on watches until I’ve seen plenty of owners shots of the watch.

    Re: Tired of CGI Watches

I’m not a fan of the renderings, but they don’t really sway me one way or the other. I usually know immediately if I’m gonna have any interest in a watch or not, regardless of whether that first impression is based off an IRL pic or a CGI. Either way, I can’t really judge the subtle nuances until I see a watch in person.

Lol, as far as Basel is concerned this year, ugh....I’m just not seeing much to get excited about from any of the pictures. Maybe the new Tag, but I guess that’s a whole ‘nother conversation.

Jason of Halios prototypes using CGI and you kinda have to order from the CGI rendering before he gets them made.
I've ne'er heard anything bad about Halios watches.

Hey, i just noticed the 1815 AC. Recent acquisition?

Back to the OP - well, nicer to have CGI than a sketch on a napkin. Or a text description ("it's round, yeah, and it has 3 hands, yeah.. and it looks great"). As has been echoed, i do look at the watch in person to make a final decision.

    Re: Tired of CGI Watches

I found that the internet is filled with the renders, then a few hours later the live images from blogs and instagrammers start to surface.

A can wait a few hours.

    Re: Tired of CGI Watches

Imagine what it was like in the 60s and 70s being a collector. Having to go to the store to discover what's new. Word of mouth. TV commercials. Mail catalogs. And at a time when all today's vintage pieces were brand new and (more) affordable.

    We're so spoiled now.
