Top 5 Lists: What are your top five watches?

Everyone likes lists. Mostly because they make a good starting point for beginning a search.

I don't know if there are five watches I like in every category below, but I'd bet lots of folks here do. So what are they? They just need to be the five you like best and that you might conceivably (without the aid of lottery winnings) buy one day. WUS has knowledgeable folks who like watches of all sorts so this is where you get to offer where you'd put your money. You don't need to have bought the watches you recommend and if you've had some hard lessons learned from a watch you bought, the last category may be a good place to mention them.

Remember this is your top five, not necessarily what you think others would agree with. You don't need to have have 5 for each category -- I sure don't -- just let us know which category you are answering for. If you know roughly (within $1000 or so) the MSRP it'd be helpful for folks who want to use this as a resource if you include that, but it's not necessary to do so.

    The categories:
    • Top 5...Period
    • Top 5 Uncommon Brands (not watches)
    • Top 5 Chrono
    • Top 5 Uncomplicated (or with only a date)
    • Top 5 Novelty
    • Top 5 Dive
    • Top 5 Ladies
    • Top 5 Grand Complication (3+ complications in one watch, not including power reserve, date
    • Top 5 Watches/brands that many folks might consider, but that you'd recommend they not buy. You must have a tangible reason to "poo poo" a watch/brand. Clone brands like Parnis are not permitted here if the copying is what you don't like about them. There are already plenty of threads that deal with that issue.

Looking forward to seeing your lists.

    All the best.

Re: Top 5 Lists: What are your top five watches?

    Top 5...Period
    - Cartier Tank ($2K+)
    - Mickey Mouse ($200 - $1500)
    - Patek Calatrava ($25K+)
    - Rolex Sub ($8K+)
    - Seiko Spring Drive ($4K+)

    Top 5 Novelty
    - A&S Perp Moon ($10K+)
    - VC Year of the Snake ($110K+)
    - Jacob & Co Caligula ($70K+)
    - Mickey Mouse ($200 - $1500)
    - Eone Bradley ($200)

    Top 5 Uncomplicated
    - JLC Reverso ($6K+)
    - Rolex Sub ($8K+)
    - Piaget Polo ($15K+)
    - Piaget Altiplano ($17K+)
    - Damasko DK12 ($4k)

    Top 5 Chrono
    - Omega Speedmaster Moon ($3K+)
    - Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec ($10K+)
    - Zenith El Primero Striking 10th ($11K+)
    - Clerc Hydroscaph ($10K+)
    - Cartier Calibre de Cartier ($9K+)

    Top 5 To Recommend Against
    - Movado - build quality far lower than one would expect for the price
    - Invicta - customer service issues
    - Tag - too many other options that are not different in any regard but the name on the dial and cost less and have more distinctive looks
    - Stauer - because they markup their prices far more (by percentage) than do even the pricey brands. It's the one brand that even I, an inveterate fashionista, would sacrifice the look and buy something else, even if Stauer were the only company on the planet to offer that look and I loved it. Whereas it's one thing for a relatively well off person to "waste" their money on, say, Rolex products, they can also afford to do so and not have the "waste" really affect them. It's another to take advantage of folks who rightly should husband their funds and who truly need to get good value for the money they spend. Charging $300 for a watch that's only worth $30 is just morally wrong. It'd anger me less if it were priced at $30K and worth but $30.

    All the best.

Re: Top 5 Lists: What are your top five watches?

I got lost on my way to f21, but what the hell?

Top 5 Uncommon Brands (not watches)
    Grand Seiko
    Credor
    Maurice Lacroix
    Orient
    Ball (is that common?)
(I would include Piaget for the altiplano and GP for the sea hawk
, but I can't see myself actually buying one)

    Top 5 Chrono
    Grand Seiko SBGC003 ($8000)
    Seiko Ananta SPS007 ($5000)
    Seiko Ananta SRQ17J1 ($5000)
(You might see a trend here, but no part of me wants a 7750)

Top 5 Uncomplicated (or with only a date)
(I'll leave GS out of this, otherwise it'll be a boring list to read)
    Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day/date ($3000)
    Glashutte
sixties blue dial (no date) ($6000)
    Seiko SD SNR003 ($4000)
    Rolex Milgauss GV
    ($8000) I know, right??

    Top 5 Novelty

    hmmm...

    Top 5 Dive
    Grand Seiko SBGA029 ($7000)
    Seiko SBBN021 (Discontinued)
    Seiko SBDB008 (Discontinued)
    Tudor Pelagos ($4000)
    Sinn 857 ($2500)

    Top 5 Ladies
    Domo is not a Lady

Top 5 Grand Complication (3+ complications in one watch, not including power reserve, date
    Citizen Campanolas
The Rolex Skydweller (not really a grand complication, but I'm gonna count it) would get a mention, but it's too expensive in 18K gold.

Top 5 Watches/brands that many folks might consider, but that you'd recommend they not buy. You must have a tangible reason to "poo poo" a watch/brand. Clone brands like Parnis are not permitted here if the copying is what you don't like about them. There are already plenty of threads that deal with that issue.

Tony, that's...that's just a BAD IDEA. How could you restrict it to just 5? ;)

Of course this list would be completely different if budget wasn't a factor. But the OP says "They just need to be the five you like best and that you might conceivably (without the aid of lottery winnings) buy one day."
So all my fantasy watches don't make the cut. (There'd be a lot less Seiko ;)

Re: Top 5 Lists: What are your top five watches?

This would be my knee-jerk reaction. It's stuff I would want to wear but could also afford to wear and that has at least some universal significance or appeal (not just personal favorites like Oris' Divers Dates):

    1. IWC Mark XI (Greatest pilot watch ever to my mind):

    Name: IWC Mark XI.jpg
Views: 1046
Size: 30.8 KB

    2. This might be a panic move, but I wanted a chronograph that was no more than 38mm and had Breitling's Navitimer Montbrillant on my wrist briefly and liked it:

    Name: Montbrillant.jpg
Views: 700
Size: 59.5 KB

    3. Some sort of 36mm Oyster Perpetual with the domed bezel / Oyster bracelet combo:

    Name: 16200.jpg
Views: 671
Size: 97.2 KB

    4. One of Citizen's Chronomasters / The CITIZEN watches - take your pick:

    (WUS user a-Tom-ic)

    Name: Chronomaster.jpg
Views: 679
Size: 59.0 KB

    5. My imaginary perfect 36mm field watch...hope to see if RGM can help me here.

5A. In lieu of an imaginary watch, I'll throw in something just as unrealistic, Patek Philippe's 35mm Calatrava:

    Name: Calatrava.jpg
Views: 697
Size: 77.8 KB

Alternate would be some sort of JLC: 37mm or less Memovox, 34mm Ultra Thin or a Grande Taille sized Reverso

    • Top 5 Watches/brands that many folks might consider, but that you'd recommend they not buy.
      - Stauer - fabricated histories and overuse of superlatives on their websites
      - Invicta - Overpriced junk. Even at 95% off retail. Still overpriced junk
      - German brands using Japanese movements - as far as I know, the "51% of the total value of the watch" rule does not apply to watches made in Germany, but I feel they could be a little more honest about the origins of their movements.
      - Seiko 5 Sports - my prejudice may be because I got a lemon. But a lot more watch can be had for the same money.
