trying to start collection, how are these ideas?

I really like watches, always have, and would like to start a collection of older watches. I have looked at a few and different types, now I don't know much so I'm just mainly going on asthetic value but would also like to get something that will keep it's value, be reliable, and possibly mean something.
I like chronograph, date right? lol, a lot of rectangle shaped cases have caught my eye.
Looking for opinions of brands, models, years, and info on where to research such things. I have just used ebay to look so far and was hoping to find out if these are good deals also.
I also would like to try my hand at small cleaning and repairs if theres links to things like that also.

would like to spend under $100 to start, maybe even get a couple for that and work up from there.

Oh yeah maybe this is crazy or at least far fetched but I always thought it would be cool to get some watches previously owned by 20's and '30 gangsters, Al Capone, Bugsy Moran, Machine Gun Kelly, do these exist? are they really rare to get ahold of?

Hi wet11383 and welcome to the forums!

I'm partial to the Poljot chrono in the first link. They make some rather decidedly unique timepieces of decent quality. Looks like you've found quite a few gems to start off with. Hey, if the price is right, and it catches your eye, go for it.

Keep in mind that some of the older pieces may need servicing. Others here with more vintage collecting experiencing can speak to the specifics but keep cost in mind. $100 to get it home may easily turn into double + to get it working properly!

    Good luck in your purchases.

Well, to start a collection I´d buy a new watch. Otherwise there´s always a risk that the first and vintage watch doesn´t run/work properly and you probably can´t repair your beauty due to the lack of skills, parts and knowledge. Starting with vintage watches may cause that you´ll loose the inclination to collect tiempieces.
BTW: Starting with an old watch <$ 100 may imply pssible dissatisfaction on the long run. Must not happen that way if the watch is ok but if there´s a problem......

I wouldn´t invest much, the case (probably a chrome plated case and not stainless steel) seem to have some dings on the right upper side, the lume of the hands is in bad condition, as far as I can see the insciription BULOVA is faded. Same with the "1" of the "10". Not a real good start imho.

Here´s a Bulova from 1928 with restored dial:

This watch fetches 72 Euro in an auction. Next fetches 172 Euro but is in overall better conditions (1949):

The Excellency (1949) fetched 138 Euro:

When starting a collection, I have found it is best to buy some different watches, that way you can really see what you like in a watch. Because what I buy now is different than some of the ones I originally bought, mainly size and automatic.

Sorry, I don't know the price in US.
In Brazil (my country), it cost 75/100 dolars.

I would start out buying a new watch. Something that you really want/love. Take the time to stalk your prey. Save the funds and then make the pull. A lot of the fun in finding a new watch is the hunt. Just know that you do not need to rush into anything. Take your time and most of all have fun and enjoy the payoff!
