Is ultra thin watch ultra fragile?

There are several luxury brands has ultra thin models. As impressive as the technique involve for fit an Automatic movement in to a thin case, are they also more fragile in comparison to regular thickness watch. Should durability be a concern during purchase? or there are other things consumer should know about before they decide to go after the style?

I'd say that yes an ultra-thin will be more fragile. It's only logical that thinner parts will not be as rugged as bigger parts with bigger tolerances. Also the cases cannot be made to be as waterproof. Now, if you are talking auto movements the real ultra-thin category starts at below 6.5mm thickness. However, you can find watches with ETA 2892 in the 8mm category. Those should be fine. Despite being only around 3mm thick, this is a rather sturdy movement. But the super flat movements by Piaget or others where they have an Auto movement that is only 2.3mm thick, possibly with date and central second, yes, I'd say those will be more fragile. Even more so for the ultra-thin handwinds in watches that are barely 6mm thick as JLC and VC make some.

Hell yes. Ever whack a watch on a door sill walking thru a doorway? Rolex, Breitling, Panerai will shrug those off easily. A couple of those with an ultra thin and you'll end up with an undernourished paperweight.

    Depends.

    How thin is ultra thin?

Back in the sixties, several manufacturers made extremely thin movement that did compromise thinness for durability. Most of these went out of production for this reason.

If the watch is fitted with a “thin” movement, such as an ETA 2892A2, it would be no less durable that any other massive 45 mm diver with a 2892 engine......

Any mechanical watch movement will be more suseceptible to shock from being slammed into a wall or being dropped on the floor than a quartz movement. It does not matter whether the mechanical movement is in a Rolex or JLC case because the escapement is equally susecptible to damage. The case could be 1/4 inch thick steel and damage from a shock could still occur. A thin dress watch like the one your are considering should be just fine if you wear it as it was intended. Don't go parachuting, diving, skate boarding or engage in oher relatively violent avtivities and all will be fine.

Some of them got crazy thin. Piguet gets 2.1mm, JCL Ultra Thin 1.85mm...etc. Does that mean these thin watches also have to be simplified to reduce the component?

I've heard the Piaget Altiplano is susceptible to damage. Local dealer told me he's heard a few complaints the Altiplano can be dented by bending one's wrist forcefully enough against the band. Wonder if anyone can confirm.

My Lucien Piccard was considered ultra-thin for it's time and it's not fragile.
