VC American 1921 vs Breguet Type XXI

    Hello fellow watch enthusiasts,

So, I'm in market for a new watch and I can go the dress watch or chronograph route. On one wrist you have one of the finest dress watches with cues that hark back to an era of exuberance and excess with art deco sensibilities. This is comes from one of the holy Trinity manufacturers, the oldest watch maker Vacheron Constantin. It features simplicity and elegance with a cushion shape done right. From lug to buckle, it exudes class.

On the other wrist is a chronograph sports watch made with the refinement of a haute horological powerhouse. Breguet was worn by the likes of Napolean, Churchill and other historical figures. The pedigree of this watch maker is top notch.

What are your thoughts? Helpful suggestions are welcomed.

I owned that Breguet once. Timeless classic that looks good even today especiaĺly in gold. The VC though is of a completely different class. Go VC!

Of the two, I'd go with the VC. Even though I'm not a fan of gold cases in general, I think that one is gorgeous! The tilted dial, sub-dial and the hands just make it all the more attractive to me.

I much prefer the simplicity and elegance of the Vacheron. If you want to get a Breguet Type XXI, then get it in stainless steel, but I think that model lacks the typical elements of the Breguet aesthetic, like the guilloche dial and Breguet hands.

VC all the way. I would never buy the Breguet in gold - steel or bust.

Vacheron for sure, that Breguet looks so busy . . .

Breguet. I love chronographs, especially with a flyback movement. The F. Piguet movement in the Breguet is a winner. Look up Piguet 1185 or F185 for more info.
The VC is admired by many (see the responses!) but looks too much like an antique to me. Obviously taste is subjective, so get what you like!

I found the movement to be imprecise and inferior to the El Primero.
