    are vendors not accepting AMEX??

i was strap shopping at watchstyle.com for a Hirsch Liberty and went to checkout and noticed they were only accepting Visa & Mastercard. 2 to 3 months ago i am certain they accepted AMEX, and the same applies to Freda Watch straps. is anyone aware of what is going on? (if i owned AMEX stock i think i would be concerned.)

Its probably because AMEX charges a higher merchant/transaction margin than the other credit cards.

There was an Amex rebellion decades ago, I'm sure it shuffles around here and there but over in London, I see more brick and mortar retailers adopting Amex rather than abandoning it. Websites, of course, are more likely to take Visa/MC.

But hey, the fact that you noticed and cared seems to indicate that Amex doesn't have -that- much to worry about =P

Amex doesn't charge interest on most of their credit card accounts so they make up for it with higher merchant discount rates. On that basis some businesses opt out of Amex. I can only guess that some merchants are either not as profitable as others and can't afford the discount, or they are willing to forgo the added business taking Amex cards would bring for increased profits on the reduced sales they do make. My impression is that the businesses that don't take Amex appear to be small shops with with lower volume.

I first got an Amex card in 1975 and it was a topic of discussion back then, so I don't think it is of concern to Amex shareholders.

With FredaWatchStraps, you should be able to pay with your AMEX through PayPal. Just open a PayPal account, add your AMEX card as one of the fund sources and there you go.
