Which watch to buy with an £1,800 ($2,900) max budget?

    Hi there,

I'm new to this great website I hope i've posted this in the correct place...

I graduated from university last year and have started my first proper job, to celebrate I thought i'd buy myself a proper watch, to go with my proper job. I'm a big watch fan but this will be my first expensive (relative to my other) timepiece, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas, i'm open to all suggestions. My max budget is £1,800 (roughly $2,900) I was thinking of a Tag Heuer Aquaracer at first but i'm also loving the idea of a Ball Ohio Moonphase.

Any ideas welcome, i'm hoping to find out about some I didn't know of!

    Cheers guys!

    James

Ball>TAG IMHO, but then, I don't like to see my watch on every other wrist, and you get spoiled by the tritium very quickly!

what kind of work/how will you have to dress?

Yes I have to agree with you there it's nice to have something different.

It's in stem cell research, most of it is very informal dress or in a lab coat so i don't need to worry too much about how the watch looks.

If you're looking for a "real watch" (to quote Jaeger Lecoultre's marketing slogan), any watch based on the Zenith Elite movement deserves your attention. They are the best priced manufacture (in-house/proprietary) movement on the market. Most models are subdued and classic in style, but some are available on a stainless steel bracelet and with additional complications (for more $). The movement has the advantage of being very slim and extremely accurate.

Here's a video of the Zenith Captain Elite:

You'll find many of these online within your price range. If you try to buy it in a bricks and mortar boutique you may have to engage in some bargaining though.

Would the watch need to be resistant to spills/ chemicals?

Hey jt67, I guess it would be good but i've no problem removing it if doing something potentially harmful to the watch. so it's not a deal breaker.

WTSP. Zenith's look great but i've a feeling they're a little out of my price range?

A lot of people in the Tag forum have had the crowns on their Aquaracer strip. My understanding is that Tag is now replacing them if they are under warranty, initially they were charging customers. I'd steer clear of that model. Ball has a lot of fans but I'm not in love with the look of the tritium tubes and if you keep the watch long enough they will need to be replaced at some point.

If you're willing to go used you have tons of options, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head at $2,900.

PO 2500, Sinn U2, Sinn 900, Breitling SuperOcean Heritage. Omega Aqua Terra 2500, Zenith El Primero HW, Omega Speedmaster, Can't go wrong with a Ball (although I don't personally find most of their models attractive).

There are lots of options in your price range to explore. Check out Chrono24.com and do a custom search.

Yes Sinn seems a good option.

Or something completely different like Seiko's Astron. Syncs time with GPS and looks awesome. Cool watch for a scientist!

    SeiyaJapan | Grand Seiko | G-Shock | Seiko Spirit | Prospex | Marinemaster | Citizen | SEIKO ASTRON High-intensity titanium modele SAST003

    SeiyaJapan | Grand Seiko | G-Shock | Seiko Spirit | Prospex | Marinemaster | Citizen | SEIKO ASTRON High-intensity titanium modele SAST007

I've read on here that seiyajapan.com is a good site. Just do a search.

Also more top of the range Citizens like "The Citizen" and Citizen Exceed, some of which have HAQ radio controlled movements.
