    "Watch Collector" questions

Hi folks, I was wondering about how many watches constitute a "collection"? Is there a recognized minimum? Also, do watches owned by a spouse count in a collection?

More than one is a collection. But some think that if there isn't a coherent theme it isn't a collection. Your spouse's watch don't count.

I think it comes down to individual perceptions. I'm not sure I have a collection, and wouldn't label myself a collector since I only own a few watches at any given time. I think of myself more as an enthusiast because while I appreciate many watches and will own a number of watches over a lifetime, I only own a small number of watches.

Two or more watches owned by you can constitute a collection. Some argue that a collection must have a theme and a disparate mob like I've got is simply a hoard.

I'd say a minimum of three for a collection. Themes not required. However my taste is pretty specific, I do enjoy and appreciate many styles, I just don't vary my purchased style much.

Two or more would become a collection. To me however, the differentiator is if you are a collector. A person can own many watches, making the their watches a collection based purely on semantic definitions, but never be a collector as they don't care about what each pieces adds. A collector on the other hand accumulates pieces that fill a gap /offer something special.

You can start a collection with one watch....

    The collection can then grow.

A collection would generally be more than 1 IMO, but I wouldn't tell anyone to come back and post only when they've bought another watch.

My wife's watches are watches that I bought for myself, but she liberated them for her use.

So, I consider them part of my collection (wife scowls at me as I type this )

    Re: "Watch Collector" questions

I make a distinction between a collection and an accumulation. I am simply an accumulator, there is no rhyme or reason except that I like the watch. Most here use collection to denote what I consider either a collection or accumulation. I tend to just use accumulation (unless the distinction is important) so it isn't seen as being pedantic.
