Put me in the "I want something different" camp, and why I don't own a Rolex. Despite the "eleventy billion" combinations claimed above, at the end of the day they all look the same from any reasonable distance. You have to be eagle-eyed to tell a Sub from a GMT, a smooth bezel date just from an AirKing or a fluted bezel date just from a day-date.

    Re: A Watch Too Popular?

I'm lucky in that no one that I know has an interest in watches really, so I usually buy what I like and don't worry about it. Now I said usually...I used to be a big Brietling wearer, and when wearing them to work, my Boss recognized the brand due to it's availability locally...and then I got the comments about how expensive they are and "I can't afford" blah, blah blah....
He wears a Casio G-Shock that's covered in dirt and plaster half the day...

Now, I have thought of buying the exact same watch as him, and one day just glancing over at his wrist and getting his attention with a nod, like "hey, I've got the same watch"....
just to mess with him a little.
No more Breitlings in my collection.... and no more comments....

He did say "thats a nice looking watch" the other day referring to my PO and asked what it was...I told him and he asked "Omega, thats a good one right?" like he was fishing....
    Cheers,
    Christopher

I absolutely love being different, but if I did have lots of money laying around, I'd buy a Rolex SubND just because I could.
That said, overwhelming majority of the world population doesn't wear an expensive watch, so I would have been fine.

I'd be a lot more worried about Seikos, because they look so damn similar between a $100 and a $5000 model and everybody can afford one.

    Interesting thread.

I have to cut through the noise and chatter in my head when I choose a watch or car or anything substantial and get what I really want regardless of popularity and brand cache. It takes time before I achieve clarity on that.

2 years ago I totaled my 11 year old Honda Accord V6 Coupe and it took 2 months to figure out that I wanted another new Honda Accord V6 Coupe. This time it's a 6 speed manual and I love it!

3 months ago I sold my 23 year old Datejust I had bought brand new. It took me 3 months to figure out I wanted a new E2 after a lot of research. It's been a fun process.

    Re: A Watch Too Popular?

Last week i was at this big party, and when I walked in I noticed 2 other girls wearing the same dress I was. How embarrassing. Granted, I'm a guy, so it looked a lot different on.

Seriously, I buy what I like, don't care if I'm the only one with it or everybody has one. I can't afford the luxury of being one of a kind. But then again, I am, so I don't give a crap.
