Going to attend my best friend's wedding in may and I'm wondering what kind of watch should I get for such an occasion (also wish to use it for future formal events). Preferably under 3000 and up to 40mm. Thanks!
I have both a Nomos Orion and an Omega Aqua Terra 38.5mm. Both are great choices for a wedding. My view is that if you want a watch for just formal occasions and when you're wearing a suit then the Nomos Orion is the better choice - especially if you have or are intending to buy other 'nice' watches for other types of attire. However, if it is likely to be your only nice watch then the Aqua Terra is the better choice. All merely my opinion of course.
Another vote for a Nomos Orion. I would suggest getting the 35 mm version. However it is far from a special occasions "only" watch. By all means wear it every day!
The co-Axial AT description on their website specifically mentions the 38.5 mm size, but you're right, I don't see it as a model option. I suspect they are still being made, but even if not, ones can definitely still be found.
Well no, I know that's not what the thread's about, but the point I'm getting to in an oblique fashion is that you probably shouldn't feel obliged to get yourself a fairly expensive watch specifically for that occasion. Unless of course, you're champing at the bit for a watch, and this presents either an excellent excuse, or a convenient timeline.
Whatever you do decide to purchase, you probably should choose with your own anticipated use in mind for the long term, rather than for an evening's wear.
Ha! Reading the thread title, I fully expected this to be for YOUR wedding. I like your style. The Orion is nice at 35mm, but no date kills me and the 38mm on my wrist looks like a dinner plate. I like the 38.5 AT suggestion--I'd go with the opaline dial on bracelet and then swap it out for leather for the wedding day in a color to match your shoes. However, to keep it under $3k, it'd have to be used. What about a Longines column wheel chrono at 40mm?
OP wants to use for "future formal events". To each his own, but I don't wear my SKX to formal events. I don't care if anyone else does, but by virtue of the fact that OP specified that he was looking for a watch for formal events, I assume he is looking for something different.
I also really like the AT, but i'd look at some of the Tag Carrera's as well. There's a couple I like that you could definitely pull off with more formal attire. The anthracite dial/bracelet and black alligator/black dial come to mind. I believe they're 38.5 or 39mm.
The AT is "cheaper" because you can get one watch that covers two roles. If you get the Nomos, you'll need another watch for less formal occasions ... assuming you don't have that covered. To me, it'd help to know what else you owned.
On another note, I was in (?) a wedding today doing the photography. I wanted to grab my Orion 38, but it had the wrong color strap on it and I was running late, so I grabbed my Skyfall AT (41.5mm) instead and it was fine.
Personally, the Orion probably would have been a better choice. But in all honesty, nobody really cares except for the wearer.

Topper is selling one of these as pre-owned select. I've owned one, though not with the gullioche dial, and it was quite nice. It's 37mm but wears large as it is all dial.
Nomos good, Montblanc good, Aqua Terra good, Zenith good. The only other thoughts I have regarding dressy watches which fit comfortably at this price point are something from either Frederique Constant or Junghans. Good luck!
