Watches for Graphic Designers - from London design studio blog

See if you agree with these choices, as presented by a graphic design studio in London:

    We Made This Ltd

I like the Max Bill and the Mondaine Helvetica. I'm not crazy about the look of the lugless Braun. Doesn't look proportional or something.

They could easily throw a Timex Weekender in there. I think the Weekender looks just as good. Just wish it was stainless steel instead of brass. (Material is part of design as well, after all.)

Of course everything man-made is/was designed - by somebody somewhere - whether well or poorly.

But what is it about "designers" that everything they touch always has that always-already cliche "odor" of effeteness?

One can clearly that the Timex was not "designed" by some design-school trained "designer.
How refreshingly straight forward, to the point of being genuinely artless.

I don't have much to contribute, but I will note that it strikes me as "odd" that three colleagues bumped in to one another at a design festival....and all three happened to be wearing the same watch from INSTRMNT. I mean, what are the odds of that happening?

I think that braun owes a lot to a damasko da 36.

    I'd say quite high, actually.
Designers and people "into" design are more conformist than they realize.
They usually like the same things (groupie mentality at work) - but they feel smug and superior, because they like things the general public does not give a poo about.

I am a marketer who spends time in arch/design circles in Southern California. The impression I have is that Nomos is developing into perhaps the watch brand in those circles for those who want a quality mechanical watch for the next 10-20 years. The price point is well above the primarily quartz watches cited in the article, but the combination of exquisite design, austere beauty, and impeccable Bauhaus design provenance seems to be very attractive to the architect/designer sensibility.

I don't really embrace the Bauhaus design for watches and would be disappointed to notice a design firm where the folks were all wearing that style.

Yeah, except for the minor fact that Braun has been using that specific dial design for its clocks (and later its watches) since at least the 1970's.

I think the objection to the Braun is lack of flow. The lugs support a visual transition/unification between strap and body...most of the time. But I don't like the bar-style lugs on that Timex; that more actively disrupts flow, to me.

But...you don't have to worry about lug to lug with the Braun. :) The downside would be that the case has to be a certain thickness. I also wonder if switching out the band for, say, a NATO strap, might be a bit more annoying. Not a killer, probably, unless you're the type to change straps frequently. :)
