Question What do you think is comparable to the Explorer 214270?

    Hey folks....

I want to get some thoughts on what you think pound for pound, dollar for dollar is comparable or superior to the Rolex Explorer 214270...

Just a few reminders about the Explorer to get the comparisons as tight as possible:
    • Manufacture movement
    • SS band
    • Water resistant to 100M
    • 39mm
    • Retail From AD $6,550.00
    • Simple Design
    • Black dial
    • Durable

I've sort of settled (with my own limited knowledge) on the Explorer I as a sort of "best fit" for me for a day in day out wearer, but am concerned that the brand is SO WELL known that there may be another watch with similar traits that I just don't know of yet.

I'm excited to see what the forum comes up with and appreciate the help greatly!

    Yes it does.

If you buy Rolex, you have to want the brand recognition/history that comes with it. Otherwise there are far superior options out there for the money (Omega/Grand Seiko).

I honestly say this from a place of ignorance...

What superior option are there, More features? better build quality?

The build quality of Grand Seiko, in particular, is superior to that of Rolex, but I much prefer the designs that Rolex is putting out. I especially love the Explorer, its my favorite Rolex, but may I suggest looking at the more traditional and understated 114270. I'm a big fan of Rolex and to learn how other Rolex fan boys feel about GS, go on TRF and look at a long thread there in which the consensus is that GS has better build quality.

Sold my Rolex Explorers (had both 36 mm and 39 mm models) and kept this, 39 mm with a date. Just liked the overall quality better (personal opinion). Just as accurate. And it was less expensive, which did not hurt . . .

I have both an Explorer and a GS. Like them both a lot. I find them to be similar build quality for the price, which for the models I own is comparable.

However, the Explorer is a classic, and has subtle design characteristics that you will not find on any other timepiece. I consider it my "daily wearer" and it looks great with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to three-piece suit.

My GS is a spring drive so even more accurate. Like the Explorer, it is beautifully designed and masterfully crafted. But it is a different watch. Wearing it is a totally different experience.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but, if possible, I'd recommend trying both to see which you like better.

Well when I started one watch to rule... I was not settled on any thing really, knew of Explorer of course, but was thinking more Planet Ocean or Datejust...

Since then (last week) a lot of comments came in on the Explorer I of being a great fit to my parameters and I have kind of settled in my mind on it for 1st place.
I guess i want to see if there are any watches out there similar to the Explorer's Parameters that may be a better choice... Sorry if it bores...
