What do you use the moon phase complication for? Is it mostly aesthetic? Is it your day to day watch and if not, do you have it on a winder or reset the moon phase when used occasionaly? Please share your experiences and pics of your moon phase as well. Thank you.
I like to use it to let me know when all my ex girlfriends will call me. Every couple of months on the same night I will hear from 2-3 different old flames. Almost always a full moon when that happens
I use it to time how often these threads come up! :-d
Seriously - It seems to be mostly aesthetic - there are some beautiful moon phase dials out there. As an amateur astronomer, I appreciate being able to keep track of the moon's doings but, again, it's fun to just have (another) cosmic themed counter on my wrist.
I keep forgetting where I put it(Moon) So it helps me keep track. It's also just cool.Stays on Winder.
I'm not sure how the Martin Braun got on here...Sorry!
I don't currently own one but it is probably my favorite non day/date complication. I just think it is really cool to know the moon phase, don't know why. Just seems pertinent
Guess I will have to start looking for an affordable model now.
So many other threads on this. I use the moon phase display for visual enjoyment. I'm a backyard astronomer who enjoys watching the phases evolve on a watch and.tall case clock. But I would consult astronomy software or just look outside to determine conditions. Understand there is limited utility for most watch complications, but collectors enjoy them nonetheless.
moon phase is one of the least useful complications ever, but it gives the dial some old school charm. I call such things gimmicks, but some purists would beg to disagree.
How many people wear chronos who never time anything (raising my hand)? What essential thing does a tourbillon accomplish? Nothing, and the proof is that my non-tourby watches work just fine. But people love and appreciate the tourbillon. What is more ridiculous than a HE value on a dive watch worn by a non-diver? The HE is useful and even necessary for pro deepwater divers but useless for anyone else.
Do moonphase complications actually have to have a use, other than being beautiful and clever, to earn their keep? Watches with only practical complications are called tool watches, I believe.
Some are extremely accurate as the IWC comes to mind - this is astonishing, FYI!...:
The moon phase display used in the Portuguese Grande Complication is astonishingly accurate and deviates by just 0.002 per cent (that's two thousandths of one percent), or 1 day, in 122 years. The Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is even more precise. Larger moon phase wheels with a higher number of teeth reduce the deviation so drastically that a future inheritor of the watch would theoretically need to take it to a watchmaker to have the moon phase display adjusted by only 1 day in 577.5 years!!!
Oh, yes... the most beautiful moon phase wrist watch ever created...:
Must be seen in person to be really appreciated. The stars are individual flecks of 24k gold, etc.
As someone living next to the sea, I find it useful for judging tide states for fishing. ... Being in the UK I can't always see the moon in reality for the perishing clouds !

You could theoretically use the moonphase to track the solunar tables for hunting and fishing. Lunar cycles influence the feeding times of fish and wildlife.
Of course, I'm not sure why you would use an expensive automatic watch for that purpose when there are inexpensive digital watches that provide both lunar and tide information, as well as special interest magazines and online sources that can help you calculate the solunar tables with a greater degree of precision anyway.

More precise than 1 day in 577.5 years...??? (Insert big-wide eyed icon here)
