What the hell is wrong, or was wrong, with my watch?

It was a Flint Automatic like $7 from ebay so I can't really complain but I got an insane amount of compliments on it.

The problem: When I'm wearing it it's fine and it turns but when you actually bring it up to look at the time, as soon as your arm reaches 90 degrees or so the thing just stops working altogether. All the cogs stopped moving and so did the time. Then as soon as you relax your arm it started working again.

I thought it wouldn't really make much difference so I just wore it, but it was just stupid, like it would lose 5 minutes in 30 seconds, even though it seemed to be fine if you didn't have it close to 90 degrees.

I threw it away anyway :( (RIP)

    Anyone ever had that happen?

Sure. Own enough mechanicals and this will happen. It needed to be serviced. I once got a really nifty vintage diver that would run like a champ if sitting dial up. Soon as I put it on my wrist it would stop. It now resides in my collection of 'vintage mechanical watches that don't work'.

I think that goes in the "What did you expect" category.

Probably the fact that you bought a Geo Metro but were expecting the performance of a Lamborghini Diablo?

If its not something wrong with the movement, could be a poorly fitted hand that is rubbing up against the dial or crystal.
    Lots of dive watches.

And why did you throw it away?!?! I totally would have taken that opportunity to tinker with the movement! I want to work with an automatic movement, but am waiting for one of my beaters to sh1t the bed so I can play with it and not feel bad if I mess it up!

For a $7 watch, anything could happen, it's a matter of time
    Ball - Casio (G-shock) - HMT - Longines - Parnis - Seagull - Steinhart - Tissot - Victorinox - Yema

Well, to actually attempt to answer your question instead of just telling you it was a $7 watch:

It's probably a worn jewel or pivot, or gunked up lube. When your arm is resting at your side, gravity puts the friction on a different part of the stems than when you're looking at the watch, dial up.

I got out of watches for a long time, but I'm coming back!
