What watch to buy for my mother as a present?

    Hello all,

Some ideas please. I would like to buy a nice watch for my mum at the end of the year as a present. She is 54 years old.

Main reason is my dad suffered a stroke towards the end of last year and she has been through a lot and worked very hard to keep things going. She definitely deserves something nice.

I want to spend between $500 to $1,000 AUD. Normally I would not buy new. But since it's a present, and also I won't have time to shop around, I will just have to bite the bullet and pay retail.

I'm lost for ideas... What are some of your suggestions on brands, model etc.....?

Will consider both mechanical and quartz.

Willing to consider second hand if it's commonly available.

    Looking forward to your advice.

It will depend alot on what style and size she would like, and whether she wears gold or silver. I bought my 70 year old mother this watch last Christmas. She loves it, and because it's solar it's virtually maintenance free.

She's quite a conservative person so I know she won't like anything that looks odd.

I would like to get a Swiss brand if possible.

My personal preference is a square or rectangular dial with a leather strap.

I always think that ladies look better wearing square/rectangular watches, and men should swear round dials.

Longines, Tissot and Raymond Weil have quite large ladies selections.

Thanks for making me feel old - your Mum is a good deal younger than me. I was talking to the chap that owns my local AD recently (I was buying yet another watch) and he said that in his experience men tended to prefer autos whereas ladies were much more likely to go for a quartz movement so don't be swayed by the type of movement in the watch. Longines, Tissot and Hamilton all have a good ladies selection.
