    What's this Elgin?

OK so I live in Vietnam, and regularly get some mod work done at an old streetside watch repairer.

He has an assortment of stuff for sale in his window - few G Shocks, the odd Seiko 5, bits and pieces of fake stuff. Whatever, it's Vietnam.

Anyhow this Elgin caught my eye and was wondering whether it is legit, interesting, approx age, worth anything or otherwise. He was busy and I was in a rush when I spotted it, so didn't have time to discuss it with him.

Kind of pondering it is as a gf gift assuming it runs well, so anything you can tell me is greatly appreciated.

Pic snapped through a glass pane, so forgive any photography issues!

Looks legit with radium hands and markers. Not sure about value.

I agree that it looks legit and over 60-years old.

I would unironically suggest you store it in a metal or lead box until tested.

Looks to be about early 1950’s. Elgin made good watches, not great or even very good. Just “good.” Collector value is low as there is little demand for these diminutive watches. Value on the low end as well, especially considering the condition of the dial.
I wouldn’t give that to your gf if I were you.

Do you think it can be cleaned up? Or that's beyond repair?

In the 1954 and 1955 Elgin Catalogue, it shows a watch similar to yours, and was listed as the Elgin Kirby 6738A, with 17 jewels, leather strap and sold for $39.75.

Note. There was another Kirby model listed as the 6738X which had an expansion band (steel bracelet) which sold for $49.75.

A dial can be refinished, but it then loses the appeal of it’s originality. However, on a watch like this it wouldn’t affect the value much because the watch doesn’t have much value to begin with. Check eBay sold items for Elgin wristwatch to get an idea.
To me it would not be worth it to refinish the dial. I don’t know what resources you have in Vietnam, or the quality of the work, but in the U.S.A. a quality redial runs about $150 (and that was five years ago with Kirk Rich Dial).
Bear in mind my thoughts on the purchase and refinish of the dial on this watch are my opinion based on my feelings. You may have fallen in love with the watch and want to “go the extra mile” getting the watch sorted the way you like, for the reasons you feel. All I can do is share my point of view, and hopefully provide some helpful facts along the way.
Good luck deciding what to do.

Nice time capsule, but I think the cost to refurbish would be prohibitive vs. watch value.
