When an Ebay seller lies and conceals...

This item came up on an Ebay suggestion:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/JUNGHANS-Vi...h/142580800972

First, note the slightly unusual position of the hands - not the usual 20 past 10. Clearly this has been done to conceal that the watch says, conspicuously, "W-SS", i.e., "Waffen SS". Second, the Waffen SS were not the Luftwaffe.

I can understand why the seller would conceal the "SS" and lie about this, but this is in violation of Ebay policy, and I have reported the item.

FWIW I find the mirror-reversed numbers on the dial interesting - I've not seen this anywhere.

It also looks to me as though the dial has been restored (though I defer to experts here) - not that it makes a difference to me.

There’s a couple of members here that really know these German historic watches. I am hoping they see your post and weigh in. I am trying to figure out why a Luftwaffe watch would have the SS detail on the dial? Seems to be off if I remember my history of WWII correctly.

That whole ss thing plus the scratched out serial number on the movement, this thing is all sorts of fishy.

He put Luftwaffe in the header so that people searching that word would find the auction. He didn't put it in the description so i don't see that as passing it off as something it isn't. People do that on ebay all the time to attract people to their listing. Reporting it because it has SS in it seems a little over the top, it's not like it has swastikas all over it with a bunch of political ramblings in the description. Its just a vintage watch from a controversial era.

I think this thread is too nit picky.

Seller obviously doesn't know the difference between Waffen SS and Luftwaffe.
Doesn't appear he was trying to mislead/fool anyone.
I personally would not be caught dead wearing a Waffen SS watch... and I don't buy anything from Russia.

The watch is a complete scam using a re-cased pocket watch movement. As fake as the Junghans Afrika Korps wrist watches offered from time to time. It is a very bad knock off of the Lange & Söhne Waffen-SS military watch.

The one and only real observer wrist watch for artillery/battery of the Waffen-SS - with balnce stop feature - was ordered by the SS Führungshauptamt IX in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and shipped to the SS Artillery School Glau - custom-made with seconds in mirror writing and five seconds scale.

In 1940, the "Waffen- und Geräteamt" of the Waffen-SS commissioned Lange & Söhne to develop an "observation clock for measuring batteries" (M-B) with a larger diameter compared to the FL 28883 B-Uhr.

Important: Junghans has not been commissioned by any Waffen-SS institution.

In 1943, 22 of these watches were finished in a nickel-plated brass case with a diameter of 65 mm by Lange & Söhne. They were fitted with Lange cal. 48.1.

First, taking a photo with the hand partly covering the "SS" suggests he knew what he was doing - almost all analogue watches on Ebay show the traditional 10:20. Second, no-one thinks "Luftwaffe" and "W-SS" are the same - someone who is ignorant wouldn't know enough to think, "oh, both have 'waffe', so they're the same". Third - and also in response to another poster - selling "SS" labelled items is a breach of Ebay's policies.

    "
Items that are not permitted include, but are not limited to...Uniforms, uniform components, weapons, or other items that bear [email protected] symbols, whether visible or covered".

The [email protected] rune is unambiguously a [email protected] symbol.
