Why can I make my second hand run backward?

On a couple of my watches that don't hack, some slight pressure on the crown when setting the time back can make the second hand reverse direction for a few seconds. I know this can actually be used to "hack" it and set it more accurately.

But I'm trying to picture how it actually occurs, given the gears that drive the second hand; And I'm having trouble figuring out what's actually happening. Does anyone have a recommended page explaining it or a diagram or video of a movement showing what's going on?

    Thanks!

Thanks - that's a great article. Not sure I've got it all square, but it certainly helps. + =

Good links. The first one pretty much answers it.

Perhaps he's visited downunder recently? If so it might be a hangover from the reverse polar magnetic field. Down here we have to have our watches specially modified to ensure that they keep running clockwise.
