Why CONUS only? Do you find Australians scary?

I frequently see watches advertised on this forum which are specified as CONUS only.
In fact, one member recently advertised an Orient Mako USA for sale. As Orient USA will not ship to Australia, I sent a PM within 40 minutes of the original posting, stating that if he would ship to Oz, I would pay the asking price plus shipping. I requested that he advise me either way.
Not only did he not respond, he edited the post to read "conus only".
What I would like to know is have many members experienced difficulties in shipping overseas or is it simply a fear of the unknown?
For those of you who don't know, Australia is a first world country with a democratic government. We are of predominantly christian faith and have strong laws on selling and purchasing goods, both domestically and internationally.
Why do so many members deliberately exclude us from their possible sales audience?

Re: Why CONUS only? Do you find Australians scary?

I've recently listed 6 watches, and have been open to shipping overseas. I've received 2 inquiries from Australia in this time, as well as 2 from Asia, and the cost to ship with tracking and insurance (and not the 2 day express shipping) is huge, more often than not resulting in the inquirer not even replying to say "no thanks, it's too much". I can see why people wouldn't want to deal with it, however, if I had CONUS on my ads, and an established member with good feedback wrote and said that they would pay the cost difference, I'd have no issues shipping abroad.

G'day BigSteve, great to meet a fellow West Aussie here. I am not even sure whether I really know what CONUS means. Does it mean Canada or Northern US? I have noticed many For Sale threads with CONUS only. It is a shame! Seriously, we do not have Kangaroos jumping all over our country!

Re: Why CONUS only? Do you find Australians scary?

It's not that people in the USA don't like Australia or other parts of the world. Some folks just want to avoid the risk of losing the watch or filling out customs forms.

When a seller in the USA ships outside of the USA he loses the protection of the US Postal Service. Mail fraud in the USA is a felony and can be prosecuted. If the fraud occurs in a foreign country the ability to pursue the fraudster is greatly reduced or simply impossible. On an expensive watch I will only sell outside the USA if the buyer pays by wire or Paypal gift (to avoid charge backs).

I've sold a watch to Australia before. The buyer was a gentleman willing to provide me with lots of evidence that he was an honest man, including his place of work and his work email address. The deal went well except that the beautiful photos he took of it made me question selling the watch in the first place.

EDIT: For those who do not know, CONUS stands for Continental (or contiguous) United States. OCONUS stands for Outside CONUS, everywhere but CONUS.

I have sold several watches to the US, one to Canada, one to Norway, and one to Malaysia - thankfully, all without any issues.

Re: Why CONUS only? Do you find Australians scary?

Along the lines of what others have noted, it is much more expensive to ship overseas which can turn off potential buyers for less expensive items. Additionally, if one tries to use the U.S. Postal Service, it can be quite a hassle...I shipped a watch to Canada a few weeks ago and I had to educate the post office employees on how to correctly attach the customs forms and what had to be included.

Since CONUS is a fairly large market I suspect that the reason many list CONUS only for sales is mainly for convenience, and because it gives a large enough pool of potential buyers to come close to maximizing one's potential revenue from the sale statistically.
