Why did you choose a watch with a high-end ETA movement over In-house?

Why did you choose a watch with a high-end ETA movement over In-house?

I'm certainly no subject matter expert but I chose ETA over in-house because ETA movements are easy to maintain, repair and most jewelers can take on any task within the movement itself. In-house sounds great on paper but it's repair costs are staggering and most jewelers will cringe unless you go to an AD. Why buy a Ferrari if you can't afford a $1000.00 oil change? This is just a passing thought and I'm certain that it's been covered many many times over; nonetheless, entertaining for sure! :)

I'm interested to here your thoughts...

I didn't, and I wont. Why buy that Ferrari if it has a Yugo engine?

    Forget jewelers, it's watchmakers.

Probably more analogous to say why buy a Ferrari when you can get the Porsche. With the Porsche you'll most likely have local support and service, less expensive more available parts, and a car that has nearly (if not equal) the performance of the Ferrari with none of the headaches.

Less expensive to purchase, better support and service, cheaper parts, very similar performance. Why do you want the Ferrari?

my two prized watches are a Nomos Club and a Stowa TO2
    both cost roughly the same.
The Nomos has an Alpha movement and the Stowa TO2 has a top grade ETA 2824-2
However, the inhouse runs at -14/+7 a day and the ETA runs at about -5/+3 a day (depending on position)
of course this is not a good sample size but InHouse isn't always better.
My Seiko5 has an inhouse movement and it was downright crazy and all over the place.

I used to be an inhouse fanatic but I've learn that there is far more to watches than the movement.

    I buy watches. Not movements.

A Porsche with a Porsche engine is fine, a Porsche with a Yugo engine, same as the Ferrari. I wouldn't buy a Patek with a movement other than a Patek. I wont buy a Panerai, which hopefully I will some day, with an ETA based, or a Portuguese, I feel I get more for the money with an in house movement. I know the pros and cons of both, hence why one of my less expensive watches has an ETA based.

People often seem to buy in house movements because they have more snob value. The idea that an in house movement somehow has a higher performance than an eta may often be mistaken. You may end up with the worst of all worlds, a poorer movement that is much more expensive to maintain than an eta. If you do opt for in house, then you should opt for something that has real horological value and heritage. That kind of brand does not normally offer eta versions anyway so no choice needs to be made.
    Have a nice day.

Does the Hamilton have a YUGO? I have one and it sure isn't a Yugo. lol I would rather think of my next watch (TUDOR) to be Rolex's Toyota model! lol
