    WIS QUIZ!!!! (Pencils ready please)

    Hi everybody!
I just came up with a set of questions (easy? difficult?) that can be used to gauge how much you know about watches and WUS.
I think this would be the "beginners test" since i´m a newbie here on the foums. Feel free to add more, edit them or maybe someone with more experience can post an "intermediate" or "advanced" set of questions.
    So here they are:

    1.-What does COSC stand for?.
    2.-What does "Ploprof" mean?.
3.-Name at least three brands with complete in-house movements.
4.-Major complaint found in Seiko´s Orange Monster´s movement.
5.-I just said "PO" , "AP", and "MG" , what am i talking about?.
6.-Name five brands within the Swatch group.
7.-"Movie star watches", is the slogan for which company?.
    8.-Brand mostly associated with NASCAR.
9.-Type of watch escapement designed to counter the effects of gravity and other perturbing forces that can affect the accuracy of a timepiece.
10.-A complication found in a mechanical watch, in which the time is chimed to the nearest minute.
11.-Name at least four forum moderators.
12.-Case width on a Rolex Submariner.
13.-Which came first? the Fifty Fathoms or the Submariner.
14.-Name at least three brands associated with James Bond.
15.-Describe at least 5 parts of an automatic watch.
16.-Name at least five watch complications.
    17.-What does "Haute Horlogerie" mean?.
    18.-What is an "ebauche"?.
19.-Movement commonly used in high-end swiss chronographs?.
20.-What is the difference between a "chronometer and a chronograph"?.
21.-Expected accuracy of a quartz watch (monthly)?.
22.-Name of model and maker of the "moonwatch".

Ploprof means that it's a professional diver. I know I'm going to butcher this, but it's an abbreviation for Plounger Professionale(sp?).

Re: WIS QUIZ!!!! (Pencils ready please)

I cheated on some answers and peeked at other people's paper.

    1.-What does COSC stand for?.

    Controle Officiel Suisse des Cronometres

    2.-What does "Ploprof" mean?.
    French for "PLOngeur PROFessionnel"
For WIS, it also refers to the Omega Ploprof; the pioneer ultra diver (>200m) watch introduced in 1970.

3.-Name at least three brands with complete in-house movements.

    Rolex, Seiko, Patek Phillipe.

4.-Major complaint found in Seiko´s Orange Monster´s movement.

7s26 movement. Cannot be hand-wound, cannot be hacked (second hand cannot be stopped); otherwise a good movement.

5.-I just said "PO" , "AP", and "MG" , what am i talking about?.
    Guesses here:
    PO = Planet Ocean
    AP = Audemars Piguet
    MG = ?? Sports cars?

6.-Name five brands within the Swatch group.
    Mido, Hamilton, Tissot, Longines, Omega.
(the list is long - any number of variations and the Swatch line itself)

7.-"Movie star watches", is the slogan for which company?.
Yep, its Hamilton alright. The answer is surprising to me personally.

    8.-Brand mostly associated with NASCAR.

    Tissot is the official timekeeper.

9.-Type of watch escapement designed to counter the effects of gravity and other perturbing forces that can affect the accuracy of a timepiece.
    Turbilion

10.-A complication found in a mechanical watch, in which the time is chimed to the nearest minute.
    Minute repeater

11.-Name at least four forum moderators.

Ernie, Eric, Tragic, Mike (I peeked, I confess)

12.-Case width on a Rolex Submariner.
    40 mm.

13.-Which came first? the Fifty Fathoms or the Submariner.
    Fifty Fathoms

14.-Name at least three brands associated with James Bond.
Rolex, Seiko (when Bond went digital in the 70s), Omega.

15.-Describe at least 5 parts of an automatic watch.

Rotor - the weight thingy that spins and powers the main spring
Balance Wheel - the thingy that rotates back and forth in the watch, like a pendulum setting the rate of time keeping (beats).
Escapement - The thingy that converts the rotation of the balance wheel into ticks.
Main spring - the spring thingy that stores all the energy needed to power the whole watch, usually fails on the day you really need to know the time and you forgot to wear the watch the previous day and you forgot to wind it...
Shock absorber system - the thingy that holds the balance wheel in position but is able to absorb shocks so that the watch movement does not fall apart the moment you knock it against the door . Has exotic names like Incabloc or KIF or Nivashoc.

16.-Name at least five watch complications.
Chronograph, Power reserve indicator, GMT, Moon phase, Minute repeater.

    17.-What does "Haute Horlogerie" mean?.
Literally "High Clock Industry" from the French. But I believe it means "high class watchmaking".

    18.-What is an "ebauche"?.
An unfinished watch movement sold to watch manufacturers.

19.-Movement commonly used in high-end swiss chronographs?
ETA 2824 with the Dubois Depraz chronograph module.
(Yes, theres that seven seven five-oh, but we're all WIS here).

20.-What is the difference between a "chronometer and a chronograph"?.
A chronometer watch is a watch tested and certified to meet certain precise standards. A chronograph is a complication with both timekeeping and stopwatch functions. A chronograph can be a chronometer.

21.-Expected accuracy of a quartz watch (monthly)?.
    1 sec/month (guess)

22.-Name of model and maker of the "moonwatch".
    Omega Speedmaster

23.-Name of a popular Chinese mechanical movement.
    pass - ?? - I don't collect em.

24.-20 Bars equals how many meters?.
    200 m.

25.-What does the standard ISO 6425 state about watches?
ISO standard for watch water resistance. Diving watch standard.
    Other than that is ???

26.-How can i tell if a watch has mineral or sapphire crystal without harming it?.
    Ask the AD....

    27.-Define "Gray-market"?
Watches that are NOT sold via authorized dealers. Also watches that are sold to countries that do not officially carry it (certain Japanese or Asia market only models to US for example).

Re: WIS QUIZ!!!! (Pencils ready please)

    2.-What does "Ploprof" mean?.
    French for "PLOngeur PROFessionnel"
Plongeur Professionnel also can mean "professional dishwasher."

3.-Name at least three brands with complete in-house movements.
    Rolex, Seiko, Patek Phillipe.
Everyone forgets the easy ones: Citizen and Seagull.

4.-Major complaint found in Seiko´s Orange Monster´s movement.
7s26 movement. Cannot be hand-wound, cannot be hacked (second hand cannot be stopped); otherwise a good movement.
There not all that accurate out of the box?

5.-I just said "PO" , "AP", and "MG" , what am i talking about?.
    Guesses here:
    PO = Planet Ocean
    AP = Audemars Piguet
    MG = ?? Sports cars?
    Muhle Gashutte

    8.-Brand mostly associated with NASCAR.
    Tissot is the official timekeeper.
I would have thought the watch most associated with NASCAR would be those things you get at Wal-Mart. (Sorry! I couldn't help myself.)

13.-Which came first? the Fifty Fathoms or the Submariner.
    Fifty Fathoms
In the underwater documentary "Le monde du silence" ("The Silent World") released in the summer of 1953, you can see an early model of a Sumbariner. Therefore, since the documentary was filmed the previous diving season, the Submariner has been in production and available since at least 1952. I think this predates the production of the Fifty-Fathoms.

15.-Describe at least 5 parts of an automatic watch.
    1) Bumper weight
    2) Shock absorber spring
    3) Sector gear
    4) One-way pawl
    5) Ratchet gear

16.-Name at least five watch complications.
Chronograph, Power reserve indicator, GMT, Moon phase, Minute repeater.
How about the simple ones, the date, the day, day/night, etc.

21.-Expected accuracy of a quartz watch (monthly)?.
    1 sec/month (guess)
ETA quartz movement, the really cheap 0 jewel, all plastic ones, (Swiss made) are held to - 0.4 to +0.6 seconds per day, or -12 to +18 sec/month. (The 955.112 seven jewel movements: -0.3 to +0.5 sec/day or -9 to +15 sec/month.)

24.-20 Bars equals how many meters?.
MINUS (-) 20 bar would be somewhere in space, I believe. +20 bar would be 200 meter below fresh water at 4 C.

25.-What does the standard ISO 6425 state about watches?
It is the industry standard for testing diver's watches and watches for use in mixed gas diving.

The industry standard for water resistant watches is ISO 2281.

Re: WIS QUIZ!!!! (Pencils ready please)

    1.-What does COSC stand for?.
Accronym for Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (official Swiss chronometer inspection)

    2.-What does "Ploprof" mean?.
Accronym for Plongeur Profesionnel (professional diver)

3.-Name at least three brands with complete in-house movements.
Seiko, Citizen, Rolex (at least most of the time).

4.-Major complaint found in Seiko´s Orange Monster´s movement.
    Not windable or hackable.

5.-I just said "PO" , "AP", and "MG" , what am i talking about?.
PO: Planet Ocean; AP: Audemars Piguet; MG: Milgause?

6.-Name five brands within the Swatch group.
Swatch, Omega, Tissot, Hamilton & Certina

7.-"Movie star watches", is the slogan for which company?.
    Hamilton

    8.-Brand mostly associated with NASCAR.
Does Skoal, Budweiser or Marlboro Make watches?

9.-Type of watch escapement designed to counter the effects of gravity and other perturbing forces that can affect the accuracy of a timepiece.
Tourbillon (it only really works in clocks - on movable surfaces - and pocket watches, not so much in wrist watches)

10.-A complication found in a mechanical watch, in which the time is chimed to the nearest minute.

    Minute Repeater

11.-Name at least four forum moderators.
Me , Mike Stuffler, Yamahaki and Crusader

12.-Case width on a Rolex Submariner.
    Just under 40mm (39.5mm).

13.-Which came first? the Fifty Fathoms or the Submariner.
    Both introduced in 1953

14.-Name at least three brands associated with James Bond.
    Seiko, Rolex and Omega

15.-Describe at least 5 parts of an automatic watch.

16.-Name at least five watch complications.
Time, Day, Date, Chronograph, Power reserve, alarm, etc.

    17.-What does "Haute Horlogerie" mean?.
Super high end (and expensive) mechanical watches with tons of complications. Usually hand assembled.

    18.-What is an "ebauche"?.
    a base movement.

19.-Movement commonly used in high-end swiss chronographs?.
    Valjoux 7750

20.-What is the difference between a "chronometer and a chronograph"?.
A chronometer is a timepiece whose movement meets very stringent accuracy specs as set by a base line. a chronograph is another word for a stop watch - a movement complication designed to measure time intervals.

21.-Expected accuracy of a quartz watch (monthly)?.
depends on the movement. "regular" models, about 15 seconds per month (+/-). High end thermocompensated models can be as good as 5-10 seconds per year. Radio controlled obviously doesn't count.

22.-Name of model and maker of the "moonwatch".
    Omega Speedmaster pro

23.-Name of a popular Chinese mechanical movement.
Tianjin _____ (aka, claro semang CL88)

24.-20 Bars equals how many maters?.
roughly 200m though it is not an exact equivalent.

25.-What does the standard ISO 6425 state about watches?
It is the 1996 update to the International Standards Organization's minimum standards for dive watches.

26.-How can i tell if a watch has mineral or sapphire crystal without harming it?.
Run it through a spectrometer. The water bead test (which is probably the answer you were seeking) is a watch collecting myth and not a reliable indicator of crystal material composition.

    27.-Define "Gray-market"?
merchants who sell real name brand products outside of official sales channels. when applied to watches, grey market sales often occur at hig discounts when compared to offerings from authorized dealers. however manufacturers do not recognize official warranties on products sold outside of official sales channels.

    Well, glad you liked them.
I´m surprised that some people missed Muhle Glasshutte.
Since i´m still learning i thought that it was a popular brand among
WIS´S (I really like the Rasmus).
I forgot to ask something about Russian watches.....sorry!
In the documentary "Le monde du silence" both the FF and the Sub appear, i´m still not sure which came first.

I´ll come up with another sociological thread soon.
Meanwhile there is always "Rolex vs. Omega"

    Cheers gentlemen
