    Caliber 9300 vs 9900 - PLANET OCEAN 600 M OMEGA CO-AXIAL CHRONOGRAPH 45.5 MM

First let me thank the forum members who have posted value added information for years as I have been a lurker in the Omega forums.

I decided to pull the trigger on a PO 600 M (232.30.46.51.01.001) several months ago, but have been a bit gun shy namely because I've been torn between two personal "grails" if you will. I finally decided on the Omega, but just read that the entire PO line is transitioning to the new movement introduced at Basel 2016. While I know the differences aren't vast, there is a certain appeal to having the caliber 9900 since the movement hasn't been updated since 2011. This will be my only Omega purchase for the next 3 years. I intend to add the IWC Big Pilot to the collection for the Big "40".

    1. Is there any appreciable benefit to getting the newest movement?
    2. Should the prices come down on the caliber 9300 pieces? If so, what are your best guesses as to when based upon past experience?
    3. As an everyday watch, do you think the PO 600 M fits the bill? I'm 6'6" and around 280 lbs with smaller wrists for someone of my size though.

My hope is to buy new from a reputable AD, but places like Jomashop make it very tempting at their current price point :)

At any rate, I appreciate any feedback received.

    1. Others here can speak better to the movements, but I think both are solid. Can't go wrong here.
    2. I don't think any prices go down. That's not usually how it goes. An annual increase far more likely.
    3. I have a PO 2500 and it's great for an everyday watch, so the PO Chrono should be good for you.

    Best of luck to you!

The 45.5mm chrono is a pretty big watch and very thick so I recommend you go try before you buy.

Yes, very thick. And very heavy. Some can pull it off, and others not so much. I had to go with the titanium version, after trying the stainless steel version at the OB first. It still looks pretty big on my 7.4" wrist.

I got a great deal, such that I didn't need to wait for the master chronometer version to start shipping. The Si14 balance spring already helps to resist magnetic fields to some degree.

The Planet Ocean 9300 above is still my favorite, and I wear it about 4-5 out of 7 days a week. However, I wore my Rolex ceramic Pepsi GMT on Thursday and Friday, then my Speedmaster Pro Moonwatch yesterday and today. Tomorrow I suspect I'll be back to the Planet Ocean 9300.

For comparison sake, my Speedmaster Pro 3570.50 with 1154 adjustable clasp weighs in at only 5.3 oz or 152 grams. My Titanium Planet Ocean 9300 on bracelet weighs 6.1 oz, or 172 grams.

So, only a 20 gram penalty to wear the Planet Ocean 9300 in Titanium! I seem to recall that the weight savings on the Omega brand blue rubber strap and Titanium deployant clasp is quite a bit more than those 20 grams.

Here is an amazing tidbit - I learned today that my Rolex Sea Dweller 43mm without the 6 gram dive extension only weighs 188 grams, but still 16 grams more than the larger Ti Planet Ocean 9300 (22 grams more with the dive extension).

The Rolex is thinner at 43mm by 15.5mm and the Planet Ocean is 45.5mm x 17.9mm thick, yet the SD43 weighs more (maybe since the SD43 can go down to 4000 feet, not just 2000 like the Planet Ocean). It's still impressive that Omega made a larger Planet Ocean 9300 weigh less than a smaller Rolex Sea Dweller, but that the smaller steel Rolex can go deeper.
