Can anyone explain why my watch runs fastER when not worn?

I had to ask this question:

When I wear my watch consistently for 12 hrs+ everyday, it runs +3.5s/day. When I wear it every other day, it runs faster: +5.28s/d. I don't wind it before I put it on, but why would it run faster if not worn? I'd think the power reserve is less, so less energy for the movement, which would slow it down???... anyone care to explain?

    :thanks

It's a whole host of things...

Temperature on and off the wrist.

    Positional changes.

    Changes in power reserve.

Not unusual for mechanical watches. This is why when a movement is subjected ti COSC tests, it's tested in various positions and temperatures to get an average accuracy of no more than +6 and no less than -4 seconds per day. Even quartz watches vary in this way, albeit somewhat less so than a mechanical watch.

That being said, there are some mechnical watches do a better job at staying more consistent than others.

It's almost certain to be mostly positional (effects of gravity)as both the previous posters have said.

When wearing your watch you are mostly a mixture of dial up and and crown down but with inertial effects and other positions mixed in. Your usage 'average position' is remarkably stable and varies from person to person I have found.

When resting, your watch is in a single position and this will cause different positional variations: try crown down, crown up, dial down and dial up. You will notice that all give different results. Rolex used to produce a table of average variation of all the positions to allow people to regulate their watch at night by resting it in the position that will slow or speed up the watch. I have an image of it somewhere; I'll have a look later.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I've found crown down works best for my PO. But I'd love to drop the +3.5s/d down even more!

Not sure if this is what M4tt is referencing or not:

    Minus4Plus6.com - Regulating a Rolex Watch

This type of positional variance caused by gravity changes while wearing a watch is what a tourbillon is designed to counteract, though, of course, there is some debate as to how effective a tourbillon truly is. Still, they're certainly a testament to craft.

thats the only resting position my watch is gaining the minimun *+1 sec every 8-10 hours* -when its not on my wrist

With the above position during the night sleep my watch is running with ~+2.8sec per day.

with every other position 6-3-9-12up/down face up/down during the night my watch is running with +4/4.5sec per day.
