You need to define how important a warranty is to you.

How important should it be. I don't know?

Most large reputable GMDs have their own warranties. It really all comes down to what you want to pay. If the difference between the GMD and an AD is negligable, then you may as well purchase from the AD.

However, if I wanted a Planet Ocean right now, I'd rather grab a gently used specimen from the sales corner or one of the trusted sellers on eBay.

Ok, say you spend over a grand on the watch you wanted, and a week later - the watch poops the bed.

You access the situation either by

    A) Being disappointed, but taking it to the Authorised dealer the following day, where they embrace you, wipe the sweat off your brow and tell you everything will be ok. Watch gets fixed, OR replaced under Warranty.

    B) Figure into the cost savings of buying a gray market watch, that theres an outside chance you'll need repairs done, and take it to a decent Watchmaker who charges you X amount of dollars to fix it, you shrug it off as a win - because you saved Y amount of dollars on the initial purchase

If you prefer A, I'd suggest an authorised dealer, If B sounds like something you might be able to deal with, Fantastic! go for it.

If authenticity and piece of mind is a priority to you, go to an AD and pay the premium. You'll be glad you did. If say, for the sake of argument, you can tolerate a little risk and purchase pre-owned from a trusted member or seller, that would mean saving a bundle and getting something you'll know you get some use out of~You'll have to weigh which scenario is more important to you, cheers!

I have never been afraid of pre-owned. This is a good point as long as I can find a complete set.

    Re: Gray market PO

Seeing that you're in the US there are a few recommended ADs that can probably match/beat gray market prices, and they'll ship it out (if in stock) to you with 1-2 day delivery. Do a little leg work and give them a call, it will be worth it.

If you'd like to save even more $$ then buy a gently used watch.
