I purchased the plastic version first, then thought about it for a day and went back and returned for the sapphire. I have not regretted it one day. Much more durable. Vintage looking watch with modern materials. . .can't go wrong

Sapphire, but “whatever floats your boat”
You won’t go wrong with either one.

    Hesalite version.

If you are going for the whole Moon watch thing, then the hesalite is it. All that you heard is correct. The domed plastic crystal gives you that classic look whilst still having a modern movement inside. You can't get that mellow look with sapphire which is absolutely crystal clear and that milky ring on the perimeter spoils it for me. Fine scratches can be easily removed with an application of Polywatch and there are many threads on this subject matter. Besides, the Speedmaster is a strap queen and you can slap on a vintage looking strap to compliment that vintage looking dome crystal.

Here's a picture of mine to show you how warm it looks.

I went hesalite. It's what I have on my vintage Omega, and has served me well, and I had zero problems with it on my old Sinn 356. Warmer, prettier and adds dimension to the dial, IMO. Some watches were born for mineral, and the Speedy Pro is one of them.

My speedy has hestalite and love it. However sapphire is definitely more durable to scratches

Re: Hesalite vs Sapphire; Still Can't Decide

I just picked up a speedy last weekend with Hesalite. Comparing the dials side-by-side at the AD was super helpful to see the slight differences. Personally, I think the clarity of the Hesalite is unmatched compared to the sapphire. Post some pictures once you make the decision!

The moon watch is hesalite. It's my daily wear, and if it's good enough for space travel then it's good enough for my terrestrial work week. Scratches and all. If you want a clean crystal then stock up on polywatch.
