I really prefer the edge to edge clarity of the hesalite, don't like the white halo look of the sapphire, but if that doesn't bother you the sapphire is definitely the way to go! If you might consider selling, I think the hesalite has broader appeal. Good luck!

Sapphire Sandwich for me. I’ve had one for 5 years. The Hesalite being the original model on the moon argument doesn’t sway me in the least. Especially considering that the 1861 movement never made it to the moon either. I’ll take the technically superior product and get the view of a beautiful movement. Others have noted that the Hesalite may appear “warmer”. The crystals are definitely shaped differently, but I love the sapphire anyway.

I bought the hesalite version last month. I love the watch, but to say the crystal scratches easily is an understatement. About two weeks ago I noticed a fingerprint smudge on mine, so without thinking I used my t-shirt to give it a quick wipe. About an hour later, thanks to the sun hitting it at just the right angle, I noticed what I thought were smudges again, but are actually faint scratches from wiping it. It was dumb of me to use my shirt, but I didn't think it was this easy to scratch it. Fortunately, it's only noticable at the right angle with the sun hitting it just right. But if could do it over again, I'd but the sapphire version.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet - but - if you are planning to go to space, only the hesalite is flight qualified by NASA. This was my deciding factor and now I just have to get my body flight qualified. A few more push-ups I suppose.
    Time may change me

I'll weigh in on the side of the hesalite just because I think the design is much stronger. If they used a sapphire in the same shape as the hesalite, I'd choose that easily. But they don't. Similarly, if the hesalite was boxy like the sapphire, I wouldn't get it. The domed look is just so beautiful.

If it won’t be your daily driver, get the hesalite and buy another watch with the money saved. Like the new Murph or the LE Alpinist.

    Great discussion all.
    Still a bit undecided.
However, if the Hesalite scratches from just a wipe with a shirt,
    maybe its not for me.

I'm sorry, but I've had enough. I have to weigh in here. The Hesalite isnt EASY to scratch...it's EASIER to scratch than the sapphire.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam. I don't think anything new can be added to the discussion. I understand that these are just opinions, BUT, do people really make decisions about a several thousand dollar expenditure on OPINIONS??

Again, not that opinions are a bad thing, but there are probably hundreds of "opinions" on this topic already. Do some research and reading...and if you have more specific questions, by all means, ask. "Tell me something I haven't heard..." Really? What exactly have you heard...and what have you not heard??

I just have one question for the OP...Have you even seen these watches in the metal and formed an opinion of your own?

I promised myself I wouldn't become this person, but COME ON PEOPLE!!

    Rant over...flame away.

I just gave my Speedy a wipe with my sleeve (like I do before every photo) and took this photo. I've had it for coming up on 5 years now. What do you think??

It is easy to scratch. It is plastic after all.

That though should not detract from which you personally prefer in the hand. Go and handle them and you will then know what you want.
If I fail to reply to your inane post just assume you are on the ignore list.

Hesalite vs Sapphire; Still Can't Decide

I had both versions a few times in various Speedmaster models; both variants are nice but prefer the warmer look of the hesalite . You may have the best of both worlds with a hesalite front / sapphire caseback speedmaster but they are no longer built, so would have to source an older Speedmaster to get it (such as the 3572.50). My 3592.50 says hi!
