Any ideas why Omega did this?
So, I'm back to the Hesalite version, plus I'll save a boat load of money.
If I only have to Polywatch it occasionally, I can live with that.
AD said Omega couldn't replicate the same curvature in sapphire; if you look at the sapphire sandwich it's more squared off than the lovely dome of the hesalite. The milky ring is extremely unappealing to me and the warmth and clarity of hesalite can't be beat on that design.

I had my hesalite Speedie Reduced for ~18 months and it never needed a polish. I flipped it for a PO 2500 but if I get another Speedmaster I'd get a hesalite Professional without question.

If you go that route it'll take plenty of abuse while looking great; you won't regret it.

After all these inputs, if you still can’t decide, maybe you should get both!

No one mentioned that the hesalite is also cheaper to replace - about 30% the cost of the sapphire. You can replace the crystal when you next service the watch so there are options when you can't Polywatch it anymore.

Are you in a situation where shards could float into the ventilation system and doom the mission? If so, hesalite as it won't shatter.

But for most practical purposes down on Earth, sapphire is the best. Do you REALLY want to polish your watch every week? Seems like a chore to me, but other people might enjoy it.
I'm content with my watch collection

In the 2 years I’ve had my hesalite Speedy I polished the crystal twice. I stopped polishing the crystal because the micro scratches aren’t that noticeable and if I do notice them they remind me me of the tool nature of the watch and it’s history on the moon anyway.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam. I don't think anything new can be added to the discussion. I understand that these are just opinions, BUT, do people really make decisions about a several thousand dollar expenditure on OPINIONS??

Again, not that opinions are a bad thing, but there are probably hundreds of "opinions" on this topic already. Do some research and reading...and if you have more specific questions, by all means, ask. "Tell me something I haven't heard..." Really? What exactly have you heard...and what have you not heard??

I just have one question for the OP...Have you even seen these watches in the metal and formed an opinion of your own?

I promised myself I wouldn't become this person, but COME ON PEOPLE!!

    Rant over...flame away.

I just gave my Speedy a wipe with my sleeve (like I do before every photo) and took this photo. I've had it for coming up on 5 years now. What do you think??

That's been my experience as well. I polish my Speedy probably a couple of times per year. I don't see all these scratches everyone talks about.

To the OP, since you don't seem as hung up on historical accuracy, I say go ahead and get the sapphire. I personally like the hesalite because that is the version that is spaceflight qualified. If that doesn't float your boat, get the sapphire.

I don't get why they can't replicate the dome without the milky ring when Oris does it on the Oris Divers 65. Once I saw the milky ring, I couldn't unsee it.

Re: Hesalite vs Sapphire; Still Can't Decide

I was in the same boat last year when I decided it was time to pull the trigger on my grail. I went with the hesalite simply because it provides a cleaner look. Although I feel the best combo would be hesalite crystal in front and sapphire or some sort of display case back as I really want to see the movement. They used to do that a few years ago but that model was discontinued.

A few have touched on this already, but you will have your answer when you see them side by side.
