Omega Speedmaster Moonphase vs Longines Moonphase

I thought I’d put a quick comparison of two similar watches I have in the collection as I did this a few times years ago and for some reason never carried them on:

The Speedmaster is circa £7k vs the Longines at £2.5k. Is the Speedmaster worth three times the price of the Longines? Well putting aside the laws of diminishing returns, despite the Longines having more complications due to the Valjoux 7751 movement (some models have column wheel, others do not. Fortunately this does), the Speedmaster wins due to the following (all IMO of course):

    - sits better on the wrist due to the larger caseback
    - higher quality clasp
    - larger case and dial
    - more legible
    - better AR coating
    - in house movement
    - better ‘feel’ overall, especially operating the crown and pushers.

So some of you are asking why did I get the Longines? Well after reading car magazines for the past 20 or so years and seeing the BRM, Graham etc watches all advertised in there I’m sure I’ve seen the Longines Moonphase in there too. All the complications in one watch with a fussy dial appealed to me back then (Longines only had a white dial at the time). So after all this time, and with the release of a new dial colour with less numbers giving a cleaner look, it was time to add one to the collection.

Impossible to glance at the time but makes me feel like a child in an adults shell everyone I see it.

The Omega on the other hand makes me feel like an adult (a fortunate one at that).

That speedmaster moonphase is so gorgeous, I was considering it but I think I'll go with GSOTM as it's slightly more special I suppose and you have all of them *jealous
    I love the ploprof too

I don’t know what else you have in the collection but in order I’d rank:

PloProf - crazy looking watch but extremely comfortable
Moonphase - complication makes it interesting
GSoM - grey ceramic, not black as per other ceramics. Platinum dial sparkles in strong light.

They’re all a winner and have their place in a collection. Just depends how versatile you want a watch to be and when you would wear that particular price.

Currently I only have the hulk, sold my panerai and tudor. I guess it will work well, a green watch and a grey watch. Diver and a chrono

The Speedmaster is magnificent, one of the most beautiful watches.

the Omega has something that makes it pop - and distinguish itself from the rest. Its an instant tell that looking at the dial that its a omega - whereas longines has a 'cheaper' look to it - and honestly to me not a unique or special appearance.

Nice comparison shot and a beautiful pair!

The Speedmaster Moonphase like yours and also the 4 subdial version (reference is escaping me) have always been my favourite Speedies.

This reminds me of a review/comparison I wrote in the Rolex sub forum comparing my Tudor BB36 and my Rolex 116000. If anything, your comparison should prove the Longines represents outstanding value and punches above its price tag.

What is the reference # for your Longines?

Both are lovely! And I would say, you can never have enough luxe watches!

Thanks for the great pics and comparison.

The Longines has quite some good value for money and the blued hands, the blue column wheel in the movement, it’s a cool watch for sure that I love wearing. Looks awesome on leather strap and on the bracelet. Love the blue dial, I have the white one.

Thanks for taking the time in providing a quick comparison of the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase and the Longines Moonphase. Even though it was a quick comparison, it was very informative. For me aesthetically, the Longine's dial is to busy, while the Omega's dial is less clutter.

Those are two beautiful pieces! I think I'm a little partial to that Moonphase Speedy though....
