Saw a mission flown Speedy today

Thought everyone here would enjoy this. Took my 5 year old to the South Carolina State Museum today, and they had Charles Duke’s mission flown Speedmaster on display. Super cool to see in person.

Very cool. Looks like it had a long life of service. I got to shake hands with Wally Shirra, one of the original Mercury astronauts, but I was only 6 at the time and couldn't tell you if he was wearing his Speedy.

I met Scott Carpenter about 20 years ago, but I wasn't into watches then and didn't even know about Speedmasters. But it was super cool meeting a Mercury astronaut.

    Fantastic.
Is it on permanent display? I may have to take my boys to see it too.

Just think of the moon dust on that thing. :) Awesome!

As an aside, Dave Scott's personal Bulova (a prototype, one of a kind) that he wore on the freaking moon only sold for $1.6M while an actor's watch (of which there are many) sold for ten times that amount. SMH.

Oh, and while looking for the auction price of Scott's Bulova, I see he sued Bulova and Kay Jewelers for something (emotional distress?? misrepresenting him??).

Summary and details here : Judge finds Apollo astronaut can sue over marketing of replica moon watch | collectSPACE

It was basically for mentioning him in the ads, and using his name/likeness without permission. The judge threw out the emotional distress part.

I am intrigued by the part of this story that says the crystal popped off Dave Scott's Omega while on the moon! Considering Omega issues a new "special edition moonwatch" every other week, I'm surprised this has never been mentioned in any of their publicity materials!

(And OP, that is an awesome photo. Thanks for sharing!)

Not sure how permanent the exhibit is - the placard for the watch said it was on loan from the Smithsonian. There was a lot of other NASA / space related stuff on display, including a number of mission flown items (suits, helmets, etc). Definitely worth checking out.
