No. Or at least they shouldn’t have done anything without also notating it on the bill.

You might have lucked out, then. Send it someplace as suggested earlier (L.A. Watch Works, for example) and they might help verify what’s original.

Thanks, I am going to be real careful now. Starting to learn a lot about collector watches!

5277, I did read about the DON bezel which mine has like both your pictures. I am also confident about the dial face as mine has the silver applied omega like your first picture. I think if it was replaced in 2001 it would be painted like your second picture. Thanks

I hope you don't mind if it's delivered by a slow boat from Nigeria.

The serial number starts with 26.5XX and the calibre is 861. Just in the last few days for the first time I have been researching this watch, all I knew previously was that is was a moon watch and that it was maybe worth 4-5g. However when searching this model number there are 2 on the net and they are 14g give or take a few 100. One of the buttons fell off (I have the button) and now I'm scared to send it in! Is it really worth that much? It does have a later model omega bracelet that was put on when serviced in 2001. As a stupid teenager I had the original bracelet replaced with a twist-o-flex, I see an original will set me back a couple grand. Thanks for the info, just need to know how much to insure it for to put it in the mail. Dan
The 1968 transitional is a highly desired watch by Speedmaster collectors.

Whatever you do, DO NOT SEND IT TO OMEGA!

No matter what requests you make of them, they will replace parts that they deem as creating a risk of the watch coming back within the 2 year warranty period. They will not take any steps to stabilize flaking lume, they will just replace the parts no matter what you ask. This could have a very large impact on the value of the watch, so you would be far better off to find a watchmaker that is well versed in vintage Speedmasters, and that will preserve the condition of the watch as it is now, and just service the movement (plus fix the pusher).

    Cheers, Al

Re: Is this Speedmaster really worth this much?

After much thought I took it in to Swiss Service Center in Lagrange, IL yesterday. They are not an Omega authorized agent, but might have been in 2001 when they serviced the watch last. Bottom line they did a great job in 2001 and the watch today gains just a few seconds a day. I was able to drop it off in person and talk to them, they are only going to replace/repair the button. I couldn't see any reason to rebuild the watch at this time. Thanks again for all the help here from everyone.
