I couldn't see any reason to rebuild the watch at this time. Thanks again for all the help here from everyone.
If it hasn't been serviced since 2001, it is certainly due for one now...by continuing to wear it in this state, you will be causing unnecessary wear in the movement.

Definitely service the movement but no need to rebuild it.

OP, listen to this guy. ^^^ He put up a thread a while back detailing what happens to a watch after its oils dry up even if it shows no outward signs of having problems.

Aren't they both the same thing? Service = clean and lubricate, clean and lubricate = disassembly and reassembly, disassembly and reassembly = rebuild.

I can see that it would be a good idea to have it cleaned and lubricated. I will do that later, I really needed to guarantee I would have the watch back soon. Grandparents let us grandkids pick out our graduation watch. I picked the Speedmaster because I wanted to be an airline pilot. I fly my retirement trip this summer as a captain on a B-787 and really want that watch back on my wrist!

Thanks again for all the info. Dan

I can see where my automotive mind overplays the watch mind!
    Thank you for the clarification.

Agreed. Nice watch, and a cool story behind it. You're lucky you still have it. I know plenty of people who lost or sold their heirlooms from earlier in life.
