Upgrade Seamaster 2254 or keep it?

I’ve owned a Seamaster 2254 for 10 years and I still like it. I recently sent it in for full Omega service and dial replacement (the lume was cracked). It cost almost $1K, but I expect the watch to come back as good as new (inside and out).

Here is my dilemma. Should I keep the watch and enjoy for another 10 years, or sell it at peak value and upgrade to something new. I’m interested in the Rolex Submariner and the Planet Ocean.

I really like the Rolex, but it seems overpriced and a bit pretentious.

I also like the P.O., but the 39.5mm seems a bit small and the 43.5 seems big and thick.

    Any opinions?

    thanks!

2254 is hard to beat on value. It won't bring enough to get close to the Rolex. I also agree with your assessment on the other Omegas.

I'd probably keep it. The $1k you spent didn't add $1k in value, and you could sell it for about the same in 10 years.

The 2254 is a great watch and while it lacks some of the refinements of the modern Omegas, it has an easily serviceable and bullet proof 1120 movement, excellent lume, nice thin profile, and classic good looks. Plus you have 10 years of history with it. I'd keep it and with the money you save by not buying the modern planet ocean or Rolex, you can afford to service it for another 20 or 30 years.

Yeah, I know you guys are right from a logical perspective. I’m just getting that itch for something new. I guess I’ll wait to see how I feel when the 2254 comes back brand new with shiny new lumes!

Definitely keep it. 2254 seems to go up in prices every year. I balked at buying pre-owned 2254 for $1500 some years ago since I knew they sold for $1200 brand new when it was available. Now 2254 goes for $2000 plus easy. It's only Omega watch I know that seems to appreciate in value every year.

If you must get a new watch, add it without flipping the 2254.

The 2254 is beautiful. Not for me as I think it looks dated but for many WUS members it is a “classic”. I love the Planet Ocean. I agree with what chillwill120 said. If you feel the need to get a new watch then add one without flipping it.

I have recently purchased a 3570.50 Speedmaster. I was planning on “flipping” my Omega 2201.50 Planet Ocean but decided to keep the 1st Gen PO. I love it too much. There’s enough room in my heart for both. I may change my mind later but for now I still love my PO 2500.

As SaoDavi said, you're not going to get $1K in value back for the $1K that you spent on service. You might as well keep the 2254 and save for a Sub or a PO.

Enjoy your 2254 as it is a classic!

The list price was $1170. I paid $900 at an AD in 2002. Still have it and still love it.

I have the America's Cup variant of the 2254 with the white metal bezel and I much prefer it over the current generation of Seamasters, except perhaps the blue ceramic PO. It's the sword hands....
