    $50 customs/tax hit - whats your highest import tax damage?

    So I purchased an SKX from Japan on eBay, price came out to about $220 shipped CAD to Toronto.
    Reputable seller with 100% feedback.

    I knew there was a small chance that I would get hit with taxes/custom fees, but $50 on a $200 watch seems excessive.

    Anyone in Toronto or anywhere else experience this? I've read that many sellers have imported watches from Japan/Philippines/Malaysia without getting dinged.

    I know I will have to sucked it up and pay it, but for that price, I could have easily just bought the item off Amazon.ca brand new.

    This was also my first time buying from overseas and it has left a sour taste in my mouth.

    What has been everyone else's experience and how much damage did it cost you?

    It is what it is. Sadly I think in most countries you're gonna have "import" taxes, VAT, etc.

    I don't understand why you paid taxes for it though. Didn't you pay it beforehand and have the seller send it to you as a normal parcel/gift thing ?

    I had to pay around 200$ for a 600$ parcel. It sucked...

    I haven't picked up the parcel yet, just got a Canada Post slip saying I owe them $50. I have a feeling it was not declared a gift.

    Just to cheer you up a little:

    Here in Brazil almost every package is hit by customs. The minimum tax is 60% of the declared value, plus state taxes, plus a postoffice fee of 12 reais. So when you import a watch here, you better be prepared to pay 2x its value.

    I got dinged $85 for a sumo. The real kicker is that it arrived damaged and I had to pay ~$80 more in return shipping fees to get the tracking number required to be able to process a PayPal refund. so I'm out huge and have nothing to show for it. Ugh.

    These stories do make me feel better. Thanks guys. I'm thinking I will start to stick to local sources. Not sure if eBay is the best route, but sometimes that piece just isn't available locally. Sucks.

    The most I have been caught with is 155 Euro but have been lucky a couple of times if I appeal the amount and say that it was a trade. An SKX007/9 locally costs about 450 euro but the price from creation is around 175 Euro add about 23% tax and its still much cheaper importing it.

    45% item claimed value + shipping. I actually ship my stuff to 2 other different countries and pick up myself or have a friend ships here with lowered item value.

    Ouch. CAD$20 tax exemption isn't very generous.

    The item’s value in Canadian dollars

    Under the provisions of the Postal Imports Remission Order, if someone mails you an itemworth CAN$20 or less, you don’t have to pay duty or taxes on the item. If the item isworth more than CAN$20, you must pay the applicable duty, the GST or HST, and any PST on the item’s full value.
    Items that do not qualify for the CAN$20 exemption include the following:

    • tobacco;
    • books;
    • periodicals;
    • magazines;
    • alcoholic beverages; and
    • goods ordered through a Canadian post office box or a Canadian intermediary.

    You can't be serious... an SKX007/009 costs 450 euros in ireland??! That's pretty crazy.

    duties in canada suck. I got hit with like $70 I think for an expensive JDM citizen promaster. Still worth it and cheaper than buying it here.

    Just got hit with $35 on a $133 citizen chrono last week which sucked.
