GRAIL ACHIEVED! (kind of) & 6138-0030 Build thread

I've been pretty happy the last few weeks because I took a massive step towards to achieving my Grail, a mint, unpolished (case)6138-0040 "Bullhead". Some of you, who like me scrounge around for 6138 or other vintage Seiko parts on ebay might have found the seller with a few "sample" NOS cases, I couldn't believe my luck. So I acquired a couple of bullhead cases as well as a 0011 ufo and 0030 kakume from the seller as well.

On receiving the cases, I realised the best bullhead I have (I have many ) is not too far off the mark in regards to unaltered edge lines on the case. Everyone is different, but for me, when assessing a vintage piece the order of importance is 1) the case condition eg original edges not polished.

So I won't use the new bullhead case until either this bullhead needs a service or a NOS 5Sport Speedtimer dial shows up.

    cheers, Mike.

So with the bullhead on the backburner, it's full steam ahead with the Kakume "champagne dial".

Ever since I saw fellow WUS member wysanz's pristine example, it really got me thinking:

But most I saw for sale were blue. The champagne dialed ones were all faded and rough. It must have been luck because when the NOS cases came up on ebay, so did a NOS genuine champagne speedtimer dial and I have it! :

Next came the donor watch for the movement:

I have been collecting 6138 parts for a while so finally I get to use the NOS Seiko arrowhead hands I have :

The only question now was which colour chrono hands to use? Old stock photos show the watch came with orange hands:

But I feel wysanz's example with the yellow hands look better. Also I could not find a new black tachymeter ring (repro) without yellow highlights and writing so the yellow hands will compliment them. It was a hard decision as I am usually a stickler for originality. I'm thinking it's not like it's a rare, historically significant piece so who cares? I'll build it for me.

Another thing that won't be "correct" is that I will be replacing the old, faded English/Kanji day wheel with a NOS English/Spanish one. Speedtimers should have the Kanji but I can't read/ won't use it anyway.

I will be taking all this stuff to my watchmaker next week. Not sure if she'll be ready this year as it's close to Christmas.

I'll keep you posted and thanks for taking the time to read my build thread!

    cheers, Mike.

Wow, impressive collection of bits! If they were Citizen 8110 related I'd be pretty jealous of you!

I am just as excited as you are to see how it turns out and I believe it'll look great. Good luck!

Thanks, I did have a yellow 8110 before but I found it a tad small.

Re: GRAIL ACHIEVED! (kind of) & 6138-0030 Build thread

    UPDATE:

Dropped off the watch and parts to the watchmaker for a quote last week:

Upon inspection, unfortunately the movement was not up to standard with some of the parts being rusty. So I will have to drop off a deconstructed 6138B movement I have to see if there is anything useful for him:

Also have some more NOS Seiko parts coming in too so just as well there is a delay. I am confident that by end of Jan 2014 I will have all the necessary parts to build an as-new 6138-0040 Seiko 5Sports Speedtimer Bullhead

    cheers, Mike.

Re: GRAIL ACHIEVED! (kind of) & 6138-0030 Build thread

More parts arrived today. Very happy that I was able to get my hands on some genuine NOS Seiko bezels. You have no idea how happy I am to have the genuine brown bezel as all the aftermarket ones I've seen are the wrong shade of brown. The brown one for my grail bullhead and the black one will be going on the 6138-0030. Since I was able to get the genuine black bezel without the yellow tachymeter script I will be reverting back to the orange chrono hands instead of the yellow. I think the original colour of the chrono hands are suppose to be red (then fade to orange over time) and I have a genuine Seiko set, but I will go with orange (aftermarket) anyway as it will match the outside of the dial.

I'm going to drop the parts off to the watchmaker this week but I don't expect he can look at them 'till after Christmas.

    cheers, Mike

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Watchmaker back from holidays and I received a call from him today. He says he can cobble together a working watch for me from the box of parts I gave him .

I accepted the quote and gave him to go-ahead. Should be ready in about six weeks.

    cheers, Mike.

    Looking really good, Mike.

May I ask where you got the NOS parts? I recently acquired 6309-836A and Im thinking the the 6138 bezel will fit my case.

    TIA.

Thanks taurnilf, I have been collecting the 6138 parts for many years and most of them were found on ebay and other places online. I don't think the 6138 bezel will fit 6309 as it is a fixed bezel ie, does not rotate. IMO, I don't think it would look right having a tachymeter bezel on a diver? Be patient and search for the correct part to show up. If I see one show up somewhere I'll let you know.

    cheers, Mike
