Looking to buy first expensive watch, and having a hard time I

    Hey all,

First post on WUS forums. I was looking to buy a secondhand Oris Aquis, and I watched a few videos about fake Oris watches. I couldn't tell the difference between a fake and real, and now I'm a little apprehensive. I wanted to see if anyone had advice on how to avoid any fakes. I know I'm supposed to buy the seller, but what if the buyer is unaware of owning a fake.

    Thanks!

My first "nice" watch was an Aquis. Great choice!

If the seller is the original owner and bought it from an AD, you should be in good shape. There are also frequent sellers on this forum who are well regarded and you can be reasonably assured of an authentic product. Alternatively, you can buy pre-owned from an AD which will cost more than a used watch but less than new.

    Welcome !

One of the questions would be - where are buying the second-hand timepiece from ? If you're buying from an AD, it should have been fully checked over, verified against manufacturer, etc etc. If you're talking eBay, could be a different story.
Before you ask, yes, I've seen -45 degrees (both Celsius and Fahrenheit)

If you’re a little nervous (can’t say I blame you) then buying from an AD gives you that extra level of assurance that the watch is genuine. The only downside is that it will be a bit more expensive.

    Welcome.

Take your time. Do some research and if you don’t feel safe with a certain purchase, don’t do it. You either do the research on your own or you buy form a AD. If you exercise common sense you will be fine.

There are certain things that make the fake ones stand out. They all appear to come in the dark grey box with varnish decoration on the top, which are not the current box design. They don’t appear to have “26 Jew” inscribed on the back of the movement. They appear to usually have the lug screws facing different ways (the genuine ones have the screw heads on the same side as the crown).

If you are looking for a used watch, look for a seller with good feedback for selling, preferably other watches. Also look for pictures of the warranty card with date and dealer stamp. Even better if they have the original sales receipt too.

Be aware also that the design changed in 2017 from the bulkier version to the more restrained version with different hands. I prefer the newer version, but many don’t.

Good luck it’s a great watch!

If you do decide to go it alone be careful as there are some very good copies out there.

Thanks all for your input! I think I'll keep my eyes open on WUS and try to find someone that's the original owner.

Before you buy, post photos of the intended watch here and get some other eyes on it to voice opinions about it. Don’t consider an Oris sold by a seller from India, they are 99% fake. And don’t pay over $1k USD for a pre-owned Aquis from anywhere.
