    Oris Super 17 jewels

I recently acquired an Oris Super vintage watch and I'm quite happy with it. A friend of mine commented on the lack of smoothness in the sweeping second hand and advised me to have the watch looked at. I personally believed that a watch such as this does not have a completely smooth sweeping second hand - in other words, that it is not indicative of any mechanical problems.

Who is right? Please see the video.

Welcome and congrats on your new purchase.

Looks perfectly normal to me, not sure what movement is in there but I'd guess it's probably running at something like 18,800 vpm (vibrations per minute) and the higher the number the smoother the sweep so Grand Seikos at 38,000 vpm will sweep twice as smoothly.

    Wear it and enjoy

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I believe it is a 482 KIF manual wind movement.

Forgive my ignorance, but if someone could help me with these questions: Does it matter which direction I manually wind the clock? One direction seems to be more effective than the other, but both gets the watch going. When I set the time, one direction (clockwise) gives some significant resistance while counter-clockwise does not. Any thoughts?

It actually only winds clockwise, if you get it running only winding counter-clockwise it's probably just running from a little stored energy from when it ran down (clockwork toys are the same, they'll run down but if you give them a gentle shake they'll briefly start up again). I believe, that in the main, one should only set the hands forward, briefly setting them backwards to set the time spot on is fine but in general they should go the way they turn when the watch is running. As yours has no date you're never going to be moving them more than twelve hours so it's not really going to matter.
