    What is Oris brand DNA?

I recently got an Oris Aquis, and like it a lot. It has caused me to think about what Oris represents as a brand. I think their slogan is “Real Watches for Real People”, and I believe they generally deliver on that premise.

They seem to represent consistently good value for a quality Swiss brand in the categories they compete in. The caliber of overall construction and thoughtfulness of design seems high. Their bracelets and clasps in particular seem to me to often be the best in their price range and better than those of many more expensive watches. Their designs have a generally clean, straightforward, and legible approach. I feel, however, that this description doesn’t quite capture all of the Oris “brand DNA”.

I wonder what others see in the brand, beyond, or in opposition to, the traits I mention above?

I think of Oris as an enthusiast's brand. It's priced higher than most non-watch people would be willing to spend on a relatively " unknown" brand(compared to Rolex, Omega, Tag etc.).

Their marketing seems to say a lot about their demographic with action/adventure type sponsorships vs. well known celebrities in music or film.

I know no one likes comparing watches to automotive brands, but I've always considered them to be in the same vein as Lotus: Highly competitive, relatively affordable, and not that well known outside of car circles.

I like (good) watch/car analogies. I understand the Lotus/Oris comparison and it's logic. At the same time, having briefly owned a Lotus Esprit, I think the Oris is a very practical purchase, whereas there often seems to be a "mad whim" undertone to Lotus purchases. It's a roll of the dice. You might get a great bargain on a supercar, or an elegant, non operating, sculpture for your driveway. I would give a strong edge on reliability to the Oris; the Lotus made the Austin-Healey I had owned decades earlier seem reliable by comparison.

I have no idea what a Michael Kors watch looks like.

girls love michael kors for some reason, must be the fashion thing.. as far as oris is concerned, I've found that it is yes an enthusiast's brand that, with rare exception, only comes under the radar of people who seem to know and appreciate watches. if you want a car analogy, i see it like an m235i, with bmw representing a well made swiss watch.. the higher up you go in the family, the relatively better it gets, but at that entry point you're still getting something damn good.
