Can the Leather from a Dress Shoe be Re-purposed?

I was looking down at my worn down and beat up pair of allen edmonds this morning and while it clearly is not in wearable condition anymore (unless I wanted the homeless look ), the leather on it was still in good condition and the color of it is still brilliant. It would be such a waste of money to chuck out the pair.

Does anyone with strap making experience know whether the leather can be re-purposed for watch straps? I think it would make excellent watch straps given the worn look. if anyone has the experience, I'll be glad to send them the pair of shoes and pay for the watch straps. Maybe someone with experience can opine if this is feasible or even worthwhile?

I have often wondered the same thing. Would love to recycle my
    Church's alligator shoes.

Probably the only way to tell is to cut up the shoe and see how thick the leather is and what sort of properties it has (stiffness, stretch etc). The other thing to consider is what sort of lengths you can get out of it. With folds you'd need a minimum strip 130mm-ish long to work with.

Talk to an experienced custom strap maker ... and try to find someone who will not simply tell you what you want to hear. You may start by inquiring about what type and thickness of leather would they be willing to work with and what type of strap will result from the shoe leather you will be providing. Between skiving and backing I would think a suitable strap should be producible, it may simply be a question of labor (and cost). A good strap maker can make a strap from just about anything ... provided they are compensated correctly.

I've been making straps out of re-purposed leather items for about a year now. Shoes don't normally work for straps, because there just isn't enough usable leather in the dimensions needed. Pallet Spoon got it right. Straps can be made from just about anything, and even regardless of thickness. One of the problems with so many shoes, is that the leather is molded and will no longer lay flat. A pair of old boots would serve better. If you really like the look, go to Goodwill and have a look at the boots or belts.

I'd ask @rene.r, I know he does straps out of belts.

Depends on the style and size of the shoe. I have done it
