    Smile Clown buckles

Does anyone out there share my newly-acquired dislike of big (pre-V) type buckles? I’ve bought my share of straps with this over-the-top fastening and quite liked them, but all of a sudden I realised how out of proportion they are to most people’s watches or indeed wrists! I am a strap lover (I take off all bracelets as a matter of course, they remind me of card-sharps and bookmakers) and just last week I was looking for a tan leather replacement for a big chunk of articulated metal on a chronograph. I searched fleaBay and all the usual suspects, including the straps and bracelets sales forum here, and finally came across a plain, discreetly stitched calf leather band with a ‘normal’ sized traditional buckle. It was a revelation – and I suddenly realised that the no-frills strap perfectly complements a watch rather than overwhelms it. For the record ( I live in the UK) the strap was a JA Willson 22mm, a budget brand from Di Modell made to German high standards in the Far East. It cost me under ten British pounds, and I love it!

    Clown buckles

I'm not a big fan personally, but sometimes they can look good on the right watch strap.

You should try a Maddog buckle!

    Agree.

On some watches, especially those with thick leather, they can work fine and look in place.

Other times they are so large they take away from the actual watch and you look like you have part of a show shovel attached to the bottom of your wrist.....
