    The company called Tropic

What's the story with them? The straps are excellent so why would they go out of business? Were they owned by a watch company?

I'm not sure but wondered same. You may have seen some guys advertising they have the original molds that they could produce from or some NOS, etc. I bought a 19mm a little while back and absolutely love it.

I don't know why my post was shipped to this deadzone though? I was asking about the company, trying find find knowledge of the company, trying to get it spotted by someone who knows about the company, so that I would know about the company also.

    Re: The company called Tropic

Those interested in vintage divers have heard of Tropic straps. Tropic straps were made by Bestfit also known as Bestfit Tropic in Switzerland during the 1960s and 1970s.

Don't know why they went out of business but it may have links to the quartz crisis. Tropic were later produced in China and Hong Kong too, using the original molds and same materials.

The originals werde labeled "TROPIC” and marked “SWISS MADE” and were usually fitted with an “INOX” ("inox" from French "inoxydable") or “ACIER” (steel) signed buckle.

Tropic straps were mounted on Rolex, Breitling, Citizen. Citizen used the multiple perforated model with a single sliding strap keeper. They were labeled “Tropic” and the lug width was added. "MOD DEP" that stands for "Modèle Déposé" which did say that the design was registered and protected.

The reference no. was also visible on one end. They are made from a very pliable rubber for a comfortable wear. A "dry out" process often led to broken straps.

Since 16.01.2012 Tropic is a registered trademark for Synchron Uhren Manufaktur GmbH, Mauerbachstrasse 40,1140 Vienna, AT (Isofrane, Aquadive, Barhyscape).

As usual in the 60s/70s they were sold in unspectacular packaging (pic thanks to chronocentric)

Btw: your post might have been moved to this deadzone since this is the Strap & Bracelets Forum and you inquired about a company making straps in the 60s\70s.

I can add that at least some watches with Tropic straps had their own name on the Tropic buckle, Kienzle which I have owned one of, and Heuer which I have seen.
