How to make the edges look fine?

Lot's of gurus here, whos straps I would like to have on my Breitling. But I decided to make one myself. For the beginning I cut my wife's old leather shoes (well, I've got her permission, they were pretty old) and digged into this forum. I have sharpened knifes, bought a leather glue and awl.
I can not find any coating for leather. No one guy (at least english speaking) in London shoe-repair stores knows what is it. Can anyone explain me what is it like and who might know in London where to get this thing. OR - are there any home-made secret recepies for finishing the edges. Thank you.

There is plenty of stuff hobbyists and pros alike use, try an Edge Kote, I would not worry to much about the coating as they where/are shoes, slice it up, have fun and build a strap, good luck.

As Shane has mentioned edge coat is the way to go, but you can also try using simple black or brown leather edge finishing paints that can usually be purchased at your shoe repair guy. The beauty of these is that they more often than not come with a small applicator brush attached.

I've done that the moment when you gave me the name. Thanx for that. Before finishing the edges I have to finish stiching. And now I admire your straps guys even more!!!

How do you make the holes with your awl so tiny and stright?

Though I do not give up and will show you my first babe soon. The Strap Culture buckle is on the way from USA to London.
