I made my first strap! :)

I've been thinking about doing this for a while and I've gathered some tools and some leather off cuts. I made this simple black leather strap, all glued, no stitching as I'm still waiting on some tools and thread arriving.

Some of the punch holes are a little squint, but otherwise, I'm really pleased with the result.

I really need to learn about proper stitching techniques, so if anybody has good strap making resources, please post them!

    Thanks. :)

Good luck with finishing up the project. Everything looks good so far. You are definitely more ambitious than I; I'm afraid I'd botch the job. Well done!

That's a lovely strap considering its a first go I noticed you haven't skived the keeper. The strap lug ends don't look like their were skived before folding over either (although this could be my eyes)...perhaps this is an area you may wish to work on especially if ur planning on user thicker leather perhaps have a go at burnishing the edges as well though I'm not sure if the particular leather will do well with burnishing. Experiment as much as possible. Don't be afraid to try new things and eventually you'll be producing stellar straps (says the guy who hasn't got a clue lol)

Ha! You're right there. My skiving knife is in the mail. This is just a basic first attempt for fun. :) I definitely want to learn more and up my game. I have another in the works, it's being made from a 25 year old leather belt so the leather is thick and very distressed. I'll definitely need the skiving knife for that. Thank you for the comments and encouragement.

I threw the practice strap on my Black Ray, today. :)

Congrats ! Seems to be shaping up pretty nicely. I'm sure your skills will get better and better. Like some one else already commented before me , I too love that skewed look keeper..........it's definately a nice design element. Well done diy, hope the stiching goes well

    looks Good.
and don't be afraid if you screwed up your 1st time Stitching.! so what? you'll make another One. remember : Practice Makes Perfect .
but I suggest to try it on a Cheap Piece of Leather. and save that 25 year old Belt when you think you're ready for that.

good luck. it's a great hobby

Very nice for the first strap! I started recently with almost the same strap design. After some tools arrived, strap looks went significantly up :)

Be prepared to loose some time and material to unsatisfying results, but experience you gain will result in even better straps in future :)

Hint: with stitching applied, straps look much much better. Google for "double stitching", results are fantastic, even for beginners (with minimal talent) :)
