    Making Watch Straps for Dummies

I'm sorry if this has been asked a million times but is there a definitive thread or place for newbies looking at getting into strap making as a hobby to get started? Basically looking for the right tools to start making my own leather bands and some sound advice.

Yeah, I've watched a few already. Is there a good vendor for buying the basic tools? Where are people buying buckles and hardware? I'm hoping to save a bit of money by not purchasing lower quality stuff now only to replace it in the future.

I have been using Tandy Leather for tools and bags of leather scrap (long enough for watch straps). Getting ready to place an order with buckle guy for thread (he beats Tandy's price hands down) and some brass NATO style rings and buckles. I think my Sora Eagle just needs antiqued brass hardware.

Otto Frei for basic parts. Not sure you can get the somewhat exotic like antiqued brass, but they have a big selection of everyday stuff.

Thanks for the advise. Actually found a local Tandy store the other day and have been slowly amassing my Amazon wish list. I'm actually getting really excited about starting soon, even found a place online that sells Horween and some Italian leather scraps. I have this goal of creating a rustic or well-worn looking strap with a red accent leather on the inside... I've enjoyed looking through everyone's pictures on their forum, lots of great ideas and inspiration!

Youtube is a good start. I just started making bands this year and I already have a business. You can check out my designs at HerrenMarke. I started with one simple design and expanded it from three. I purchased a strap from Bas & Lokes for $150 to see what the high end bands were like. When it arrived I decided right then I was going to start making bands. lol

Those look nice! Where do you buy your leather from if you don't mind me asking?
