    Metal Bracelet Question (Beginner here)

I need to reduce the size of my metal bracelet by 3 links. Am I better off removing 2 on one side and 1 on the other? Or should I only remove 1 on each side and then move the clasp over about 1 link's worth?

Define "better off". There are no rules or standards to removing links; simply remove them as you find mechanically convenient, aesthetically pleasing, and/or physically comfortable.

The target is to have the clasp centered on one side of your wrist, and the face on the other. So, yes, you want to balance the link removal. I would probably start with 1 on each side, then adjust the clasp.

Then again, by adjusting the clasp, it will take it off-center as well. So if I have to adjust it a link's worth, then technically there should be no difference....no?

I know that for just about every new bracelet I've had, either as an aftermarket bracelet or on a new watch, I have to remove three links. So I open the bracelet at the clasp and remove one from each side and then drape it over my wrist and decide which side needs another, given that I have the micro-adjustments as well. There is no right or wrong way, you just have to figure out what works for you.

The clasp adjustment is usually less than a link. So, yes, start as HerrNano suggests...try it in with all links, get a sense of how many to remove. (Hasn't been mentioned...but a tailor's cloth tape measure, to measure your wrist and the total size of the bracelet, would be useful too.) Start by removing in a balanced manner, then try it and see what's next...another link, or a clasp adjustment. At the latter stages, link size and the amount of adjustment in the clasp become big factors, and they vary from model to model. That's why we can't get a lot more specific.

BTW, this is a nice page:

The tool they show is a GREAT help. Easy to find in a simple watch toolkit, along with things like a spring bar removal tool.
