    My straps (leatherworking hobbyi)

Last year I took up leatherworking as a hobby. I naturally fused if with my passion for watches. I don't have much time for the hobby, and I work on the straps and other leather projects only late in the evenings but I find it relaxing and enjoyable. Here are some of my projects. Maybe they'll be of interest to other budding leatherworkers. Any comments or questions are welcome!

From an online store mostly but I also re-use leather from old bags, belts, etc. The brown one (also the one on the Alpinist) is made out of my wife's old handbag that she wanted to throw away.

Great results, what thickness of leather do you use. I am just beginning to make some straps, but the leather I have been practicing on is too thick in the springbar area to fit on most of my watches.Name: Slide1.JPG

Where are you guys getting your hardware?

I made one for a WWII Cyma several years ago based on an historical photo I found of a similar watch. I ended up having to wear it "backward" so that the buckle wouldn't get in the way of typing on my laptop.

Unfortunately, it seems something about the tannage is not compatible with the watch. After a while, a green slime appeared. I think some oils from the leather were leaching copper from the brass of the watch case. The watch no longer lives on the strap, and I need to make a new one with some vegetable tanned leather.

Great looking straps - I especially like the two in black leather.
