New strap too short. Do I have any options?

I bought a beautiful "lizard" leather strap on ebay for $20. Turns out I have an 8" wrist and this strap is only 7.5 inches max. I'd love to still be able to use it. Is there any way to salvage this? Some kind of expandable buckle or something?

No not really, when a leather strap is too short, it is too short. This is why when in doubt, best to go longer than needed. Too much strap might look weird, but it works. Too little though, and you can't wear it.

Plus if the strap is too short, you will be more prone to dropping the watch fiddling with a tiny piece of strap to get it buckled. Too risky. My only suggestion is perhaps a deployant clasp might be a solution, and you could dispense with the floating keeper.

Buy or switch it to a watch with longer lug to lug dimension

A deployant might add a couple of millimeters, but don't think it will be enough to provide the length you need.
