Orientation of Buckle on Strap - 6 or 12 o'clock?

I watched the new Hodinkee video featuring John Mayer where they were discussing IWC Big Pilots. I noticed that Mayer always wears them on leather straps and the shorter strap with the buckle is always at 6 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock. I've never seen this. My buckle is always at 12 o'clock. I'm sure this topic has been covered elsewhere, but just curious if this is common? And for those who wear their straps this way, is it easier for you to secure the buckle this way, or another reason?

It's not common, but I see it from time to time. I've seen some deployant straps that are designed to be setup that way. There's really no right or wrong, but they are designed to and most commonly worn with the buckle at the 12 o'clock end.

I believe in that video all of Mayer's watches were on deployant clasps, except for the 55mm watch which had a buckle and it was on the 12 o'clock side. IWC, Tudor (Heritage Ranger,) and Alpina (Startimer Pilot Manufacture) use deployants that put the longer side of the strap at 12 o'clock so the tail is held by the keepers on the 6 o'clock side of the wrist.

My B&R has a deployant that is 'backwards'. Most comfy band I have. Wonder if it would work with a regular strap...

A JDM Seiko I bought last year arrived with the buckle end of the strap fitted at 6 o'clock. I'd guess that some nationalities wear the straps that way as a matter of course. I tried it as it came for a few days and got used to doing the strap up "backwards" quite quickly but eventually refitted the strap the "right" way.

I doubt it, I have a strap that came the 6 o'clock fashion and I tried it for a few weeks. Wasn't comfortable at all, switched it to the "normal" method after that. It may also be a factor on wrist size and other things though, I have a pretty big wrist so if the buckle is hitting in an usual position for me it can give me a pretty weird feeling.

I always wear the buckle side at the 6. Just seems more natural when I put it on. I do wear them the other way, if it helps center the watch.

I switched around the leather band on my Datejust so the buckle was at 6 o'clock, and the end/tail snagged on my shirt twice. Quickly switched it back. And the comment about Mayer's being deployment clasps was correct, didn't notice that at first.

It look cleaner on the outwards (12) side, personally I can't get used to it hence changing the strap on my Seiko SARB065 which has a reversed side deployment strap. All preference in my eyes.
