Purpose of vents in rubber straps?

Hi all, just ordered a bonetto cinturini 284 strap for my Turtle and was wanting to know a little more about the history of these types of straps. Does anyone know what function the vents in Seiko's rubber straps serve? I remember hearing mentioned in passing on a Grey Nato podcast that it was something to do with taking up the slack as a diver descends and the increased pressure causes their wrist to decrease, can anyone verify that? Also, in general, what benefits does rubber bring as a strap?

    thanks!

By no means an expert, but increased flexibility depending on suit/wrist size +/- swelling (from water especially) is important.

In terms of general daily use? Odourless, stainless, flexible, water proof, disposable, and sporty to name a few reasons. Bracelets taking damage can ruin resale, and the material being unyielding can pose a security concern if snagged or caught (especially if you're caught up in a heavy current/wave). Worst case, rubber will tear and you surface.

No need to overthink it, I just think it's an obvious piece of technology to use with divers and, once made readily available, became a popular option.

From a daily streetware use, lighter weight and easier to fit precisely. They can be a problem in hot weather, tho, as you will sweat copiously under them. Holes can help here.

The expandable "vents" keep the strap snug as your wetsuit sleeve compresses with depth.
